HF autodarkening helmet TIG'in issues

Just curious if anyone who TIG welds uses a HF autodarkening helmet? My helmet has never gave me any problems when using my MIG but when I bust out the TIG. It's like it not dimming enough cause it's like I'm welding without a helmet. I can go back bust out my MIG and it works fine. It's like it just can't handle the TIG's rays. I don't even weld with the TIG cause I don't feel like looking like Ray Charles. O0 I've got the helmet adjusted as high and quick to darken as it can go and still rawdogs my eyeballs.

probally just cant handle the intensity of the light.

get a miller if you can scrounge up the cash, i ------- love mine, never had a problem once and its solar charged.

My HF did the same thing. Its almost like it flares up. Mine would work for a few minutes, then it was like it quit dimming for a second, then went back to dark. It started really ------- up my welds because it was blinding when it flashed. I wanna keep my eyesight :S so I just purchased a Jackson Executive VL-HTLS for $265 online.

Cartridge might be going bad on that HF, but I didn't ---- with it. Figured it was time for an upgrade anyway.

It's probably a good 3 years old so I'll just take it in and get a new one. I took it out side and held it up to the sun and it didn't even turn on. :S

Mine worked fine but after using it for a month I just scrapped it for a Miller. I am on my second Miller and its great.

stop using continuous high frequency, its ------- up the electronics in the helmet. high freq is just electricity jumping though the air and it fucks up cell phones, watches, ---- like that.

uh, i weld daily on aluminum which requires the use of hf continuous and it never fucks with my miller auto darkening helmet.

adjust that bitch or get you a nice helmet, or get a flip helmet the tried and true way

I got a speedglas helmet a while back, the low-end model at ~$149 @ebay IIRC. I've used it for TIG and it works fine. Seriously the best money I've ever spent on something, including -----. But thats because I don't have to pay for ----- either ::)

miller pro series here. no major issues other than low amp start ups on AC. you should be able to find them for $130-150 pretty easily if not cheaper

I use the HF auto darkening helmet and it works just fine on my TA Dragster 85.

Re: HF autodarkening helmet TIG'in issues

i have heard that some are not intended for tig use cause they wont darken properly. even then i have been able to use them on tig's but i have found its accually the tig machine that makes some of the hood's not darken. my chinese tig wont allow my hood to darken properly, it will go in and out, while i use it at work all day no probs doing aluminum or stainless or if i turn it down to 7 amps.

so all i can say is some tigs for some reason dont darken some hoods properly.

HF helmet suck. Battery life is ----. For tig the sensor is easily obstructed and will flash you during low-amp, the AD doesn't get dark enough for mid-high amp. Not dark enough formid-high amp wire... Get real helmet or spend $50 buying a crap Jackson Shadow and putting a gold plated lens in it. They're 200x better than a normal lens and 300x better than the HF bullshit.

I like my Speedglas SL. Only weighs 12oz, freakishly good optics and and it's headgear is as buttery as oiled floppy titties. SL's are the best thing going. $239 and a slow $30 rebate - june 08.

I low-medium amp tig on 8-10 at home and weld 300amp, 1/16" flux 8-10 hours a day on 12. Plenty good. All the miller and Jackson guys in the shop want my helmet for the weight It's ungodly lighter than the miller AD's, the jackson nexgen and boss lines. Way lighter than cheap flip screens. Optics are better too. So is the headgear. Too bad norespirator kit :'(

AD's will all darken with tig. The two problems you run into is being flashed at low amp settings and not having enough UV/IR shielding for mid amperage TIG work. t takes alot more filtering for TIG and plasma welding that it does the others.
