Glavanized elbows?

Well the other day I took a trip to homedepot and was looking for some cheap pipe elbows to do a pretty ghetto manifold out of. I saw some 1 1/4 elbos and they seemed to fit perfect for their sizes. But all they had was galvanized, so I'm wondering now, will the zinc coating hurt the turbo if it melts off? Or is it really not that big of a deal? Or should I just return them and look elsewhere for some regular black iron elbows?

If you weld galvanized you run the risk of hurting yourself. The fumes are deadly.

Man I went there this morning and didn't see ----. All the elbows they had were threaded. Just go on mcmaster-carr and get some real weld-eLs.

not dead yet... but then again give anything time and thatll be another story.

i keep hearing mixed stories about welding it, do it everyday at work without a resporator and just a little peice of leather hanging from the bottom of my hood to channel the air from getting under and in my hood. i work with guys that have done it forever.. but they have done so many drugs its hard to tell what the effects of the galvanize was.

Re: Glavanized elbows?

And they're mother ------- morons too.
welding galvanized metal will make you sick with metal fume fever. you'll get sick... it's just a questin of your tolerance. may take afew days before you get sick afew hours later, or it may take one great big whiff.
continued exposure will put you in a hospital with lung damage.
I can't tell you exactly what kind of lung damage, but we've already had one boy in my welding class drop out from welding galvanized pipe & work. guy welded some galvanized pipe for about 2 weeks. was sick each night (metal fever). eventually his parents hospitalized him & he has lung damage & is on disability for afew months @ 18-19.

------- kids think they're 10' tall. Don't be stupid. grind all the coating off anywhere near the weld area.

i use gavlanized pipe too sometimes, but i by god grind the ---- off too~!

Re: Glavanized elbows?

I can attest to how bad welding galvinized is. The fumes have a really obnoxious smell to them, and after doing just exhaust and charge pipe work over the course of 3 days it made me sick...not just sick, but a nasty sick with ungodly headaches to the point I couldn't even stand. After that I started getting pipes from a different source that weren't galvanized and I've been fine since then. If you want the same elbows I used, get them from the black iron pipe section in Home Depot...they're used mostly for gas lines and old steam heat setups.

Re: Glavanized elbows?

^ werd listen 2 the man.
i got sick once too, mask filled up with fumes a couple of times in a few hours & you'd take just a handful of breaths of that nasty stuff. i felt fine for afew hours, then could bearly sit up without wanting to hurl.

Re: Glavanized elbows?

Oh, I definatly planned on hitting them with the grinder before welding. I'm no idiot about welding it, I was just wondering if that ---- would dammage the turbo or not. But I actually found a local place to get some nice butt-weld elbows for cheap, so ---- the galvanized elbows.

Well first, stop buying the short radius ones. Those are a grip no matter where you get them.

acestainless sells them for much less than mcmaster.

interesting. i have had a problem with feeling light headed and kinda nausous around 4:00 on my work days. sounds like its probly related. i think ill be wearing my resperator again. its all sheet metal so i will have no luck with grinding it off.

Even a wire wheel works.

Or hell try to find maybe aluminized instead of galvanized steel. I was gonna say Ace but I couldn't remember the name while I was making the type and was too lazy to look at the sponsor list here. lol.

Thats great, problem is you didn't post what I need. Where I am using these I need exactly what is pictured, nothing more nothing less. You however have not shown me what I need. I don't care how much more I paid for mild vs. stainless its what I needed.

Now I don't know what ACE or Racing-Solutions HTM prices are but figure this.

ACE Stainless (Web Price) : 2" sch10 90° elbow 304/304L $14.56 shipped (3-5 days)
Mcmaster-carr: 2" sch10 90° elbow 304/304L $13.08 shipped (1-2 days)

How is Mcmaster-carr a ripoff?

Toysrme 03-05-2007 12:52 PM

Re: Glavanized elbows?

because it's the same general sizing, mcmcaar is ------- experiance, and you're a moron for using mild when u coulda used stainless & saved money.
lmao

WTF are you trying to say? And I dont need stainless, mainly for the reason that I don't have any way to weld it. Even if I wanted stainless Mcmaster-carr is cheaper and quicker to ship.

Just call ace. They will probably match mcamasters price.

Im sure they will but..... according to their site they don't stock what I need, which is 2in Mild Steel, short Radius, 90deg butt welds. Ive already bought what I need just trying to show that Mcmaster-carr is a valid place for bends.
