First ever manifold - Migged log

10 Attachment(s)
Hi guys,

Just a few pics of the log manifold I'm working on at the moment. It's my first one so I've still got a lot to figure out.

Attachment 22079
First I crushed and tacked the 2 90s

Attachment 22080
I then cut and tacked 2 90s to make a sort of collector

Attachment 22081
Attachment 22082

Attachment 22083
I had to extend the 90s slightly so I cut some straight pieces and welded them on. I welded it on the inside also.

Attachment 22084
I then welded the collector up. Got quite good penetration but I also welded it up on the inside.

Attachment 22085
Hose clamps to see what it looked like.

Attachment 22086
Attachment 22087
Attachment 22088
Cleaned up a bit.

I've just cut the pipes for runners 2 and 3.

The turbo has arrived so I'm looking to see the best way to mount the turbo.

Just a question. I've got a dummy head, could I bolt on the head flange and weld directly on the head? Also what about the turbo flange, should I bolt it up to the turbo and weld it up?

Thanks for looking, sorry about the camera (phone cameras suck!)

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

you was supposed the clean the metal up before you welded

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

Yep, bolt it to the head and turbo when welding.
If you make another, just ------ the merge out some and you can do without the short pieces. You will just have to hammer the outlet to match the flange a little bit. Not sure if any of these pictures will help, but here are some

btw, you picked one that is a real bitch to make as your first.

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

Thanks for the comments. Yeah it's a little tricky but I'll get it in the end. I should have cleaned it before I welded the 2 short pieces but I guess I kind of rushed it. I'll make sure everything else is clean before I finish it up.

Just had another look at the prelude engine bay and it's gonna be kind of tight with a T3/T40e in there. Might need to make a smaller torque mount. I'll get some more pics up soon.

Thanks for the comments.

Thanks man! Those pics are a real help! Not sure about the position of the WG flange cos it's quite tight in the 4th gen lude bay, but I'll have another look tonight.

I'm gonna plasma cut the holes for runners 2 and 3. Should have pics of that soon.

I love mig'd manifolds. Mig welds just have that home-brewed aspect that a clean tig weld doesn't have. lol

Me three. My manifold I MIG'd with cast steel fittings still hasn't cracked, and its carrying the turbo's full weight and has the added stress of a recirculated dump w/o a flex on it. Solid.

So I done a bit more welding.

Sorry for the crap phone camera pics again.

Attachment 21804
My super jig to stop my flange from warping!

Attachment 21805
Tacked on just incase

Attachment 21806
Attachment 21807
Attachment 21808
Tacked on the runners

Attachment 21809
Welded runners 2 and 3 first

Attachment 21810
All Welded up

Just need to clean up the splatter and weld on the Turbo flange. Also need to weld on the wastegate flange.. still figuring it out.

thanks for looking.

nice job. i'd definitely rock that.

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

good job man! what did you use to cut the holes in the 90's for the 2 & 3 runners? holesaw?

vtec_lude 12-13-2007 09:20 PM

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

I used a plasma cutter for that. I took the manifold off the jig and there's no warpage so I'm pretty pleased with that. Next is the wastegate flange and T3 flange. Not sure which order to do it first. Once that's done I'll completely clean up the splatter.

It's almost done.

Just need to fully weld up the t3 flange and the waste gate flange.

thinking of mounting the wastegate flange like this.

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

Yeah this turbo is actually mainly for mocking up purposes. My mate gave it to me so I could get this manifold done.

Looking good man I think my next mani is going to be that style...Thinking a boosted H2B in my CRX with an H23 or a junkyard F series....

Thanks,

I don't think it'll break.. I'm happy with it.

looks like it fits good. Migged logs are tits.

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

Not bad it looks good. If you make the back trans mount solid then you should not need the front mount.

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

what size bends did u go with? Im looking to make one soon, and ive heard its best to go the same size as the ports on the head.

Re: First ever manifold - Migged log

I went with 1.5 inch ID sch10 316L pipes. Seem to match the ports ok when crushed.
