Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
would welding some fins on the underside of the oil pan would lower your oil temps? does anyone have any experience with this? i think ive seen it on a v8.

Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
haha
probably a tad |
Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
investing in an oil cooler would be easier/cheaper.

Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
oil coolers are like 30 bucks on ebay

Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
Fins on the pan is an old-school hot rod v8 trick. It'll help a little bit if you have road clearance like those old cars used to have, but if you've lowered the car quite a bit and have any kind of bumper lip extending down it pretty much negates the purpose. A remote mount oil cooler is a much better idea anyway.

Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
But then the price for the remote mount, block adapter, hoses, radiator gets pretty pricey. I say try it out...what do you have to lose?

Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
Very nice foir $100? Nope
To do it properly and efficiently Im sure you $250+ if you use the right compression fitting and braided line and not a 1/2 ass oil cooler I dunno how much affect fins on the pan would do, You mean like 1/2" fins or somethin going from front to back? Technically I guess it works, but I dont know ho much, and my oil pan aint but 2.5" off the ground anyways.... |
Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
You will most effective heat disipation with aluminium. but the time you will have invested in cleaning fabing and welding is far to time consuming and less effective than a external oil cooler
get fittings from Aces stainless or WOFSCO |
Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
doesn't the S2000 or some other honda have a finned pan?
|
Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
fin would strengthen the oil pan also, if you were to scrape it.
no doubt an oil cooler would be more effective, but if you have a free afternoon and you were going to change your oil any way why not do it. it would look rad help dissapate heat i can't see it taking more than 3-4 hours and cost much if you have spare aluminum lying around to do everything. |

Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
Notice the pan is made out of aluminum for maximum heat transfer. Steel pans don't tend to transfer heat too well.

Havent had one in years |
Re: Fins on Underside of Oil Pan
i'd personally be kind of afraid to run an aluminum pan on a lowered car, esp where I live. Knoxville roads are potty as ----.
aluminum + impact = :'( |

y whatever..I'm just saying one of those ------- y series engines has a ------- aluminium oil pan. Wait...I had a y7 in my hatch that had a AL oil pan. Pulled it straight from my buddy's bone stizzock 97 del sol. Not to mention another y7 I had. That also had a AL oil pan. Now why someone would go through the hassle of swapping those on is beyond me but they were AL pans.
