finally built my own exhaust
well i really got tired of running open downpipe, and smelling like raw ass gas when i got out of the car. plus it was mad loud, and i was always getting hassled by the local law.
so i grabbed some 3 inch mandrel bends from a buddy, got a stick of 3 inch from an exhaust shop, my chop saw and mig welder and went at it. not bad for my first complete exhaust, so i think. i used a "Bullet" muffler from summit, the welds looked like ass, but for 27 bux i cant complain, i also used a 3 inch V band from full race to go from the downpipe to the exhaust, much easier to take off. and i had to put a gangster dump on the back https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...Picture111.jpg https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...Picture109.jpg https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...Picture108.jpg https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...Picture110.jpg all in all i like it, i did have to put a couple tiny bends in it with a bender but nothing that would inhibit flow, it is much nicer to have the noise back at the rear of the car, instead of under my feet! it is kinda loud still but i hadnt found a 3 inch resonator yet locally so i will probably have to order one from the internerD |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
Great job, cant beat the price!
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
looks very nice being homemade :6
Roadrace sell resonators for cheap: http://www.roadraceengineering.com/exhaustparts.htm glass packed and louvered cored, shouldn`t cause any noticable restriction, glass packed alone don`t do ---- anyway. |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
Just noticed you're around Mobile. (i think). I got a buddy down there with a red turbo eg b18 hatch. Don't know why I mentioned that..but I did.
Exhaust looks good. Muffler looks funny in a good way. |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
That came out real good. Where's the pic of the v-band, and how much did that ---- run you?
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
thanks guys, for the price i really couldnt beat it.
stealthmode- i only used 1 V band at the front in the first pic, i wanted to be able to remove it without using those piece of ---- 3 bolt flanges, as my hands are FAT and i can never get the top bolt! yes i am in mobile, but i dont know of anyone with an LS turbo hatch, i work at the ONLY performance store in mobile, so im sure he has to know who i am |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
hmm looks very nice!
im going to be starting my own here real soon! |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
i was going for the ghetto version of the SPOON N1!
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
thats HMT at it's finest!!
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
Oh duh. I read the post and thought for some reason you meant at the turbo/downpipe connection. Anyway, you forgot how much the v-band was. I've never even seen a price, but I've heard people say how spendy they are.

Re: finally built my own exhaust
no flex section in there? tsk tsk! ;)

flex is on the downpipe, been down that road too many times without one stealthmode- i got the V band for 30 bux form full race they had a sale on them, both flanges and the clamp |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
NASTY! i woulda never thought of using v-band on an exhaust, i should give that a try O0 nice turn down too
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
vband is pimp! :y
|

Looks good, I wish I had a hoist when I built my exhaust.
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust

Re: finally built my own exhaust
that v band is nice, looks really good.
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
Awesome, when I get my car back together I'll have to give that a try. ---- Custom Exhaust Specialties those bastards wanted $400 for a custom o2 Housing and downpipe. I could buy a welder and make 3 different ones for that much.

Re: finally built my own exhaust
hahaha. how much whp are you making? what are the specs on the hatch? dont think you've ever posted em :8
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
Looks good
I built a 2" exhaust for emmisiosn with a new cat and a resonator, I got lazy and went dumpster divinvg for everything, used square 90 degrees bends and some funky rear LCA ---- going on, Im just gonna disconnect my exhaust from my downpipe (when I get it and build it 3") on the street and hopefully cops will beleive it broke when bottoming out or something and ofcourse I'll still pass emissions looks good |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
heck yea i'm loving that custom exhaust. Whenever I get a full 3" exhaust setup for my car i'm going with that vband for sure.
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
same here, im thinking about buying a welder, you could actually save a lot of money making it yourself and dp and what not and learn something along the way.
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
really like the turndown. :y
|
Re: finally built my own exhaust
cant beat the price. only downside is that it probably sounds like a giant bumble bee from hell :P

Get a resonator in there, and itll mellow out and sound good. I use 2 inline resonators w/ no can on my 3". Sounds fine. |
Re: finally built my own exhaust
so did the glasspack bring down the noise a bunch or is it still open dp loud? Im debating wether i should get another muffler, i have the same glasspack (24" though) and im open dp but i wanna be quieter, open dp hasnt been deafening but i want a significant sound reduction...

Re: finally built my own exhaust
that (except for the vband) is almost exactly what I had in mind for my EK.
