Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

So I ditched the solenoid-based idea, it just didn't open fast enough (also more expensive, scarce parts). So I went to looking for cheap geared motors, and it dawned on me - use my spare EF wiper motor!! It needed some work due to the gearing (inertia issues), but its really fast and shouldn't burn out (OEM honda, y0!).

All I used was a mustang throttle body, 2 microswitches, a 'dpdt' relay, and a cheap 60" throttle cable. And lots of screws & metal... Time & material for me was still less than a slow-ass $150 cutout. The best part is my cutout's motor only draws power when moving, not when parked. To activate it you simply turn the relay on, i.e. ground one terminal using an eCtune GPO...

Blah blah blah. So how fast is it? Watch the videos:

FYI this is "low" speed; the shaft spins with 50% more speed & torque on high. Not bad for a $19 hacked CVS camcorder.

Here's the ON-CAR test, same $19 camcorder (sucks with the high volume)

For reference, here is a bling'in wireless e-cutout that takes a full 5 seconds to open

Yes, zipties might help

Thanks for the idea, I can now put some of my extra old throttle bodies to use.

why not use a door lock solenoid?

I was going to say the same thing. I have one somewhere in my appartement and it open pretty fast.

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA!

First off, they're expensive vs a $10 wiper motor. They might be fast, but you also need decent power over a long travel (long for a solenoid), or create a cantilever system. They would also have to be rated for continuous-duty, or they'll fry (or you need a 2nd parking solenoid). The way a solenoid works is the coil is an electromagnet, and that pulls/pushes a metal shaft. The farther away that shaft is, the less power it has. The solenoids I have give 210oz (13lbs) of holding power, pull 125oz with it .05" out, 20oz at .50", and 5oz at 1.00"; that doesn't account for friction around the shaft, cable, etc.

Long story short, door poppers are good for popping doors. :P It would involve a similar amount of work, and cost more.

Anyways I got my turbo EG all bolted up again, and its the quietest Civic I've ever owned - better than my bone-stock CX... until I flip the switch. >:D

Not all that bad https://www.directedstore.com/cgi-bi...ategory%3DA_SE

But still very cool what you did.

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA!

If thats a motor, you still need the limit switches. I would guess DEI brains only send power for a second to prevent burnout.

I'll have *working* installed pics soon, I just had to roll the car outside before routing the cable. I never thought when I got my first Honda I'd be happy to have a QUIET car... ;D

Looks nice. Where did you end up mounting the motor to run it?

I have the motor in the trunk. I found a nice hole on that sill just behind the seat, and it goes straight down to where you see it in this picture. Those Honda guys read my mind - it was freakin perfect.

did you use a throttle body or was that made specific for a cut out

Yeah fire that ---- right at the gas tank.

txdohczc 11-03-2008 04:45 AM

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

probably not the best idea but it does have a heat shield

HiProfile 11-03-2008 04:09 PM

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

It was listed as a normal throttle cable, since it has the barrel ends cast to the cable. Its just an oridinary Ford 'modular v8' throttle body cut short, they came on most ford mustangs/crown vics/etc from 93-00 or so. You can find good deals on ebay if you watch.

I am mildly concerned that I'll get some flamage towards the gas tank, but unless it starts leaking or the heat sheild falls off...it will never be a fire hazard. Gasoline has a flashpoint of 475F, and I measured the first inch of the downpipe at 550F after a beat run, and the TB never sees >250F. I'll probably get a cast elbow/turndown welded on so it only hits the pavement.

On a side note, I'm glad eCtune has working boost cut. My dumb ass has the EBC disconnected, and the wrong tube routed to the WG. 10psi was fun though. durrrr :1

lol. one nice backfire and BOOM!
great job though. does it leak at all, or can you hear a leak

not quiet. its not like the outside of the gas tank is covered in gas

HiProfile 11-08-2008 12:52 AM

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

Well if it leaked, you'd see the condensation/vapor coming out, as well as drips. One vid shows a big splash of water fly out when I open it... ;)

As far as I can see and hear, there's not leak near the cutout, despite the 3/32" flange warpage. The only 'leak' is after the cutout - the donut seal on for the axle-back came off half & half, so I used some permatex to glue it on :P Nowhere on the exhaust can I hear the typical pfpfpfpf you get on a HMT turbo kit or HMT exhaust. I used permatex's copper goo on all the manifold/exhaust seals, and a new gasket for the 3" flange.

Except for the loud, unadjusted-lifter SOHC head, its very quiet. I can almost hear the Wiseco's slapping when I start it up...

i was thinking would it work to use a throttle body from a drive by wire vehicle? they got electric motors in them and can open fairly quickly, however i dont know if their electric motors will be able to handle the heat from the exhaust

How much would you want to make me one? >:D

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

Most motors can take as much heat as the TB itself. I'll probably be testing how hot it gets, although it will be 40F outside.

The issue you'll have is the motor they used. It will almost certainly be a stepper motor, which requires a small controller (DIY for under $50). THe cheap controllers usually will do one step at a time, $$$ units can probably to enough steps for 90 degree swings and be programable. THe issue is you get into complicated electronics and lots of money. THe truth is I haven't thought of anything cheaper than this, and Stephen Hawking IM's me for support. :-*

I could probably make another for a decent price, but it will have a thin flange for the TB - and I'd probably need to grab a HMT sponsorship to say YES. You could actually pick up the TB and motor yourself to make it better. ALL EF wiper motors are the same part #, and Ford made this same TB for many years on many makes of cars.

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

I have a spare LS throttle body that i'll try to do this with for my 2.5" exhaust. The diameters are going to be really close.

HiProfile 11-11-2008 01:36 AM

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

All obd1/2 LS TB's are 60mm, so with the stock exhaust before it, it should be fine. It doesn't really matter, since its just the very restrictive muffler that causes the most losses.

I used the front EF wiper motor (all 88-91 EF's use the same part #), but almost any wiper motor should work. Some companies use circuitry in the newer cars in the motor housing to always return to the same spot, and aren't reversable, so be wary of other sources. Since this motor rarely dies, there should be lots of them in junkyards. The best part IMO was the dual speed ability of this motor.

You could just be super cool and use a pull choke. Then it would open as fast as you can move your hand O0

Re: Fastest e-cutout - opens faster than you can say OBAMA! (with VIDEOS)

Actually I got a manual throttle/choke cable at work, one that semi-locks open & closed. But I just decided to go balls-out and rig this up. Half my time was spent getting the damn limit switches working juuust right.

Im doing it, tommorow! Very nice...

coldstar 04-08-2010 11:59 PM

why not use a power window motor? lots of torque and it swings both ways :o

2wickedtoyz 12-22-2010 12:26 PM

this is a great rig. you can keep mpg in the city and increase on the highway. plus you get sleeper status!! that is awsome. thanks for sharing.

sorry to bump an old thread, but if there isn't already an in-depth write up of building this you should make one :)
