DIY turbo timer
i was reading through all the FAQ threads and stumbled across one that someone was talking about using a capacitor on the ignition + 12v to essentially keep the ignition wire hot until the capacitor ran out of power after you turned the key switch to off. technically letting it run until the cap ran out of juice. now there was only a few replies to it and it seemes like it was going somewhere but people stopped messing with it and it never really got explained.
now i think i could prolly figure this out and make it work but im wondering if any of you have already done it or would like to offer up some advice on which capacitor/relays on which wire/switches should be used. i know all you gotta do is not rip on it for a few minutes before you park or whatever but i just like the idea of really really cheap and just not having to give a ---- and turning it off when i want. i also like the idea of not having a bunch of cluttered ---- in my car so i really liked this write up and think its a cheap alternative any have any suggestions or ideas? *preparing to get flamed...* |
Re: DIY turbo timer
yeah I built one but never tested it. I starting out using a cap and it's keeps a relay engaged. Then I tryed using a 555 timer. But I sold my crx before i completed it. I still have the schemtics and i just bought a new crx so the project will contiune.

Re: DIY turbo timer
im sitting at work right now working on a schematic for it but if you could throw yours up it would help
|
Re: DIY turbo timer
iam in class right now and i have the schem at home. I will throw up as soon as i can

Re: DIY turbo timer
awesome sounds good man, im looking for a project to do on my long holiday weekend

sounds creamy... like baileys..

now this is a real quick schematic i through together that we can maybe start with? now im no ------ engineer yet so go easy on me if its way the ---- off.

Re: DIY turbo timer
my only thing is i dont think power will come out of the cap unless both leads are touching the same thing. but if there isnt a diode the power would just keep the ------ thing always on?
|
Re: DIY turbo timer
o wait ---- then theres nothing to power it either... son of a bitch
maybe swing the diode up to the top red wire between where it splices for the cap and where power splices back in? |
Re: DIY turbo timer
hey post a link so i can download your schem
|
Re: DIY turbo timer

Re: DIY turbo timer
easier to just right click and save as
|
Re: DIY turbo timer
ok just e-mail it to me! photobucket is blocked at my campus I have some time left to look over and modify it before i leave class
|
Re: DIY turbo timer
RIGHT CLICK THE PICTURE AND CLICK SAVE AS. ----------IN EDIT THAT BITCH
wait can you see the pic in the thread at all?? |
Re: DIY turbo timer
not a damn pic at all they straight up cock block that ---- at school.
|
Re: DIY turbo timer
I still have my protoboard boards too so when I get home I will snap some pics. And throw up the schem.

Re: DIY turbo timer
what is the purpose of the diode. i think you are way over complicating it

Re: DIY turbo timer
in for the up date

Re: DIY turbo timer
I built one with a 555 timer, a couple of caps, a pot, and a transistor driving a relay. It does just what it is supposto, it is variable from 1 to 15 minutes by turning a knob. Parts were free because I am an electrical tech, however they can be purchased for 5 to 10 bucks.

Re: DIY turbo timer
yeah i never got to test my 555 timer on the car.

Re: DIY turbo timer
radio shack still carries this ---- even the 555 timer. But I usualy just pick up electronics on the side of the road and desolder everthing. But then my chic calls my a heartless basterd.

Re: DIY turbo timer
hey wicked have you tested it out in a car yet
|
Re: DIY turbo timer
I never tested it on the car, crashed the damn thing before I get the chance. It will probally go into the next build. Its pretty dan simple though, all you are doing is sending power to the ecm, ignition, injectors, fuel pump, for a timed period. I have mine built with a 4 pole relay so I can have 4 seperate circuits running through it. I mounted it all in a little plastic box, I stuck a couple of status led's, a dial for the time delay, and a bypass switch.

Re: DIY turbo timer
think you could whip up a quick MS paint schematic of that beast?

first noob that gets one running and posts a wright up will earn some good credit |

Yeah, I can make that happen. I believe I ave it written down a work some where so you wont see it until monday. Here are some pics of it and my 14point7 wide band. That is a piezo switch on the top, you turn it on by touch. I have too much free time at work!
I hope I posted the right link for pics :1 Attachment 16703 Attachment 16704 Attachment 16705 Attachment 16706 Attachment 16707 |

Re: DIY turbo timer
Here's the thing, how cheap does it need to be? You can get some cheapo ching chong timers on ebay for about $24 shipped. Ebay Turbo Timer Or you can spend about $12 (half that price is the relay) at radio shack and have one that is adjustable with an off pushbutton. If there is enough interest in the radio shack version, I'll post a schematic and all the parts you need to get at your local radio shack, so chime in. Also, you would need a soldering iron for this project. |

Re: DIY turbo timer
um.. looks like your diagram is trying to have the capacitor hold power to the whole ignition system. If i were you id punch inline and see how many amps it pulls continuiously. Cause your gonna need one big ass capacitor to hold charge for that much power. Maybe even a flux capacitor lol. jk. The way the turbo timer works is when you turn the key off it switches power to the circuit which holds power from the battery until the circuit shuts off. having a capacitor that only has to supply 10ma for 1-15 minuites is alot easier and smaller capactor then trying to hold 5amps for 1-15 min. do the math Power = current * voltage. Your way might hold power for 1 millisecond, unless your using like a 10 farad cap that costs alot more then a turbo timer.
you cant ghettoize the turbo timer anymore its already super cheap on egay. considering the components it has in it. 25 bucks is a good deal. |
Re: DIY turbo timer
He's using the cap to keep the relay shut which keeps the circuit live. The problem is that the cap will only supply about 5 seconds of power to the relay. You have to use a transistor to drive the relay i unless you want to use a really huge cap. A 555 timer would work a lot better in this situation.

Re: DIY turbo timer
I would be interested in the schematic if you don't mind!

Re: DIY turbo timer
I'm building a similar circuit for a timer to keep the fans running after the engine dies. I'll post it, but it will be weeks from now. I'm traveling for a while tomorrow.

Re: DIY turbo timer
i think i figured out the 555 timer and everything and from the looks of it i think i could build one for about 3 or 4 dollars thats adjustable and has a push button off switch. ill see if i can find the schematic i made... hold up

Re: DIY turbo timer
1 Attachment(s)
i remember that i did make some changes to it after i made this but it should be kinda close, if im actually using the 555 timer correctly which theres a good chance im not. this is the simplified version that is not adjustable
the positive is 12v constant. ground is ground obviously output goes to factory siwtched 12v. s1 is a switch that when pushed opens the ciruit I THINK... dont hate to much if im WAY off Attachment 16249 |
Re: DIY turbo timer
i bought my timer today and if i can find a coil for my car and get it running ill ---- with it tonight.
