DIY headers
 

I'm planning on building a set of headers for my Turbo truck project finaly. :S

I'm curious on what type of material to use, and what gauge/size material wise and size of piping to use (1 5/8 1 7/8 ? )

Any pros an cons on using aluminized pipe VS. mild steel pipe

Aluminized won't rust wherever the coating is left on after cutting and grinding and welding. Though with the coating, it can interfere with getting a good bead when welding. Not sure how good it holds up to the heat that it would see. Mild wouldn't be bad but for how much stainless is compared to mild steel. I'd just go with stainless as it's pretty cheap right now and just a few bucks more then mild. You ever think of getting one of those header kits on Summit cause those are pretty cheap and you'd just need a flange for whatever turbo your running.Oh I found this also concerning welding coated metals.

jesus, that's a hell of a write up.

I had though (currently thinking ) of those summit kits, That was my main question, you any piping be just fine ? or is it better to run thicker stuff to hold in heat, or what not,

460 CI through a T3 flange is going to be abit of heat anyways

Where does one find those bad ass flex pipes ??

Some one just made a pimp DP and wastegate dump with the flex pipe ! And some T-3 flanges ?!

What flexpipe you talking about? Just go on ebay or is it something special? Some me a pic of this dp your talking about so I have a better idea of what your looking for.

from my understanding (read somewere in maximun boost ) thinner wall actually gives better heat retention than thick wall as the more material there is the more there is to act as a heat sink, but abviously you have to make a trade off for stregth

schedule 10 or 40 T304 stainless. 1 5/8" to give a quicker spool less your stock exhaust ports are gorillas.
merge into 2-2.25" pipe, then either merge again into 2.5", or go twin turbo.

the fumes from welding/cutting aluminized and galvanized pipe will give side affects ranging from feeling like you have the worst flu case ever for afew hours to a day to hospitalization if your body just can't handle it. So remove the coatings before welding, inside and out and weld outside.
I was welding outsize two years ago on some galvanized pipe I had wire brushed to base metal inside and out, outside on a breezy day. Supper time rolled around and I couldn't move without feeling the need to throw up. We had one boy in our welding class hospitalized for over a month for doing welding on galvanized pipe, outside w no respiration at his job after only 3 days.
most people don't think it's very serious (its generally not), but its not something you want to mess with trust me.



T304 tube / pipe is very cheap. No need to go cheaper MS unless you actually have reasons to do so.
