Custom brake setup question

Okay I was doing a brake job on a 97 subaru lagacy wagon the other day and noticed they come with dual piston calipers....this got me to thinking, If I could find a car like this or some list of cars with these kinda of calipers, find me a set and swap them out for my stock single piston calipers...Can it be done? would it take any fabrication?

It's a civic so everything bolts on.

Re: Custom brake setup question

very funny. I'm pretty sure I asked what I would have to fabricate....? If you noticed I actually do work on cars I'm not one of these rich kids that buys an sti and says I got some sick ----. yeah I drive a civic, no I don't think everything bolts on which is why I asked. You guys need to chill out, I have searched on this topic and I haven't seen any write ups or articles or anything on converting Subaru brakes to work on my civic. Sorry for asking a question I thought that was the point of a forum.

Re: Custom brake setup question

Well go out and make them fit and you can start a new trend. I guess people use honda dual piston calipers cause sometime honda stuff is kinda related to each other and easier to make fit. I seen people use the dual piston calipers from NSX's and Legends I think. I've seen the NSX calipers on civics before. It's just finding the calipers.

Thats the easy part

I don't expect it to be just bolt on which is why I asked what kind of work it would take to make them work.

Wagon.

Oh yeah, Porsche 6 pots will fit, great for slowing down from 175-180 mph in a Civic.

Find something with a similar rotor size an a dual piston and see if there is a way to make it happen. The impossible is only underfunded. Drill, cut, chop, rebuild, but don't hack, breaks are ------- important!! :6

Re: Custom brake setup question

hey first of all I ain't trying to go 180 in my civic. any person who owns a civic with a sohc motor that thinks he is going 180 is straight up crazy. But I do run the local road course at times, and some more stopping power would be nice. I was thinking these calipers and some ceramic pads. and for me to go find some porsche calipers I might as well go buy myself a baer or brembo big brake kit that comes with the rear disc brake conversion and stop on a dime. But since I ain't about to drop around $1000 on the brakes on my daily driver I would rather go with suby calipers from a junkyard car for like $35 with pads. sounds like a better idea to me.

Re: Custom brake setup question

Legend calipers are 2 piston, if you care. Some grinding on the mounting surface or a 3-5mm brake disc spacer is needed though.

Re: Custom brake setup question

I do care. thanks man! I would rather use all honda products something about using subaru brakes on a honda makes me a little queazy, but more performance is cool and I am on a budget for the whole car.

Re: Custom brake setup question

Hell go find some RX7 TII or the model below them and they have nice aluminium 4 piston calipers. Otherwise I say just get some rebuilt Legend calipers from autozone and toss some old civic calipers back in the box for the core charge. lol.

Re: Custom brake setup question

you should see my h-t style brake colection, 4x100 4 wheel disc setup with 10.2 fronts and 9 rears, 4x114.3 with 11.2 front with spoon calipers and 10 inch rears, 5x114.3 with 13.5 fronts, mugen calipers and 10 inch rears. All for my eg, I love brakes :P

curently the car has the 4x114.3 on it with stock 5 lug type r calipers on all 4 corners, v-tec prelude front rotors and accord rear rotors so my 15 inch 96 spec type r wheels will clear with no spacers and looks dead stock. :8

Re: Custom brake setup question

thanks for your help guys I am actually getting useful responses now. If I can find a junked rx7 with those 4 piston calipers I may go with that. If I am gonna have to trim up legend calipers to fit anyways might as well go with the 4 pistons. I was actually thinking about doing the rebuilt calipers idea through one of those auto parts stores. But if I can find them in a junkyard for cheaper I will do that. We will see.

use calipers from an acura legend with the dual piston calipers...prolly pretty regular in some junk yards...not down here in the boot tho there aint ---- in our yards...at least last time i went out

D16y7DX 04-11-2008 04:03 AM

Re: Custom brake setup question

our yards are not bad when i was gonna do a head swap I went and found 3 civics with d16z6's 2 of which the heads were already gone I went back the next week cause I didn't have cash for it at the time and it was gone I was pissed. this car had everything I needed, head, solenoid, and ecu. oh well I got the y8 now so its all good. Would I risk detonation running a y7 block with a y8 head if I used the a6 head gasket? the compression ratio is suposedly around 9.95:1? I thought it was a bit high, but I figured I would ask the experts.

If you get some wrx brakes you can put them on your legacy. Just do some research on Nasioc. I know it doesnt take a whole lot.

Re: Custom brake setup question

Multi-piston calipers are hype, not worth the bother. Going with different surface areas (number and sizes of pistons) will offer different pedal travels and efforts, but there is nothing wrong with stock on a Civic.

Get a rotor with more mass (either aftermarket race rotor in OE size, or larger) and get better pads. Done deal.

Re: Custom brake setup question

You can do this on pretty much any 10.4" or 9.5" teg/civic setup. NSX/Legend/ITR calipers need the 23T or 25T brackets shaved 0.127" where it mounts to the knuckle surfaces. On a 9.5" hub, you can now use 10.4" discs, and on 10.4" hubs you can use 11.1" discs (Prelude VTEC 4x114 redrilled to 4x100 w/hubcentric spacers). You'll then want the 15/16" or 1" brake cylinder/booster for the larger rotors, and 7/8" or 15/16" for the others. You really don't need dual pistons unless you have a heavy-ass civic with 5 ppl in it and a full sound system. Most light Civics really don't need brake upgrades though.

Re: Custom brake setup question

I love how they were 10.2" brakes a decade ago, 10.3" brakes six years ago, and now they are 10.4"

Classic.

Re: Custom brake setup question

the legacy isn't mine. its about my civic. But for now the brakes are put on hold til I get paid next then I am just gonna go with some blank advanced auto parts rotors, and some top of the line ceramic pads in the front and if I have enough left over start looking for the neccesary pieces for a rear disc brake conversion.
