clamp a whole exhuast together ?

im doing another cheap as possible turbo kit, and i dont feel like paying the 400 everyone wants to build me an exhaust.seems everyone wants an extra 100 frostys this time cause i have an external wg. anyone ever just clamp the ---- together?

i was thinkin having a downpipe (w/ flex hopefully) welded, then 2.5"stright pipe and what like 2 90s and a 45 or 2 (96 civic) and a half dozen clamps and a cheap muffler. cant be that bad, and ive used wire and strapping before to hold the ---- to the hangers :6

Find a local muffler shop, if you have a muffler local shop does $110 for 2.5" crush bent.

rent a pipe expander from kragen for free and use exhaust clamps.

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

The pipe expander thing sounds pretty good. the crush bent option is pretty good as well. call around local muffler shops and baby your ---- to the shop. I had one of my turbo civics done about 6 months ago. $270 for three inch mandrel.. Plus you wouldent believe all the other ---- that was included. you never know until you call around.

yeah call the local muffler shops, you can usually get a good deal. one time one shop told me 125 to make me a downpipe so i went somewhere else and they did it for 40. some places have crack prices just need to shop around

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

unless you have some mean ass clamps, i'd say no. I've done it and it was just more problems than the money saved was worth. The clamps don't keep the exhaust from twisting and drooping down if you have bends in it, and to get them apart later you need a hammer, and then you can't get them back together. If you cut the pieces how you want them, it should cost much to have them welded together or have flanges welded on

Buy a smiley tig and some cheap 2.5" stainless 180's and DIY. Will be much better than what the exhaust shops will do and will cost about the same. ~ $400

Oh and it will flow really nice too.

is tig stick welding :1 is that harder then wire feed

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

my first welding experiance was flux core wire feed welder and tried to make my owne exhaust. it can be done, mine turned out like ass but i will most likeley try again in the future. the pipeing was free from the junk tube pile at the exhaust shop.

Well. If your welding was anything like your spelling I dont doubt that it sucked.

How do you miss-spell OWN anyway?

yes, with gas and a tungsten electrode instead of using the rod for the electrode. no, its not harder it just takes a long time :)

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

You need to weld your exhaust, imagine driving down the street and a clamp comes undone and bam there goes your muffler.

your a stupid little girl.

theres no way the clamps just come off, they crimp the pipe a little, theres more of a chance it will leak then come off, i pretty much made this post to see if anyone would produce pictures of some janky ---- they did, so i could get ideas for my riggery

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

I don't have any pics, but I have seen entire exhausts clamped together. I say run it, if you have any problems, it can always be welded later.

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

slip-fit piping+clamps+muffler cement around the area where the pipe is slipped over=golden

veracity 06-12-2007 02:15 AM

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

unless you use some kind of exhaust cement or maybe jbweld to back up the clamps don't do it. built my own 2.5" header-back exhaust and only used 2 clamps (the rest welded) but somehow blew the pipes apart playing around and thought i was going to throw it into my buddy's windshield. they do squeeze the piping down which makes it even more fun to try to slip the pipes back together after they blow (of course miles from home). but you have to know someone who can atleast stumble through the welding process. use your clamps to get all the pipes and angles where they need to be, tighten em down good so they won't twist, and pull it all out and lay some beads on it. doesn't matter if you use stick or wire. or you could pull it all out, borrow someone's truck and drive it to someone who only has to spend 20-30 minutes welding it up. probably save you alot of $$

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

i made my 2.5" exhaust for about $75. buy all the pipes and clamps at autozone. that was with a 24" cherry bomb resonator and a cheap traight thru muffler. quiet as stock. I borrowed a HF welder to just tack the pipes together after they were clamped to ensure they didnt move. The only spot i had come apart was right before the resonator. i must not have cranked down on it tight enough. dont pay $400 for an exhaust.

Re: clamp a whole exhuast together ?

ya ---- 400, thats more then i spent on everything else. i ended up getting a whole 2.5" turbo back used from a friend for 50bucks. just need to have the DP redone. next time its getting clamped
