Chop saw or Band saw?

Which one would be easier and better for fabricating manifolds, exhausts, roll cage. I'm tired using my hacksaw!

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

I only have a Band saw, and personally, I see no need for a Chop Saw. I luv my 225.00 CAN bandsaw with a REALLY good Bi-Metal blade in it!!! No sparks, no fine dust flying around, No need to go to the hospital to get metal drilled out of my eye(oh I don't miss that day!!)

Cheap 4x6 Bandsaw ANYDAY!!!!

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

Those band saws wont cut ----. You would need a drop down saw.

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

those are wood cutting band saws... you need to slow them down with pulleys to make em work for metal. something tells me they dont have to power to cut slowly either.

Something like that should work for you.I have no experience with those Harbour Freight units but I would imagine it is adequate for home use.

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

I used a small drop saw and had problem with not gettina staright cut, perhaps the blade needed tightened or something to that effect. Either way, the band saw yields a cleaner product.

your very wrong about blade speed, at work i cut 304-306 Stainless at liek 200 sfpm. its all in what type of blade u use and how fast you feed.

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

I cut mild steel at 200sfpm as well.

I have a Jet brand horizontal/vertical 3/4" bandsaw that circulates oil/coolant. I absolutely love it although they are over 1k new. Cuts cleanly though.

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

i wish i had bought a quality band saw for everyday use and a cheap chop saw for a backup cutting tool but instead i have a nice chop saw and a hf band saw.

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

I have a delta chopsaw i bought for ~$200 CND. No, it doesn't cut true 90's consistantly. I have to dress the ends with an angle grinder. It is fast though. A bandsaw is on the wishlist for the time being. :(

You have to take some time and adjust it properly.

Re: Chop saw or Band saw?

I don't make 90s all the time and it's nothing critical so I'm not concerned. It beats using a hacksaw any way you slice it (pun).

What type blade, How old of blade? How are you squaring you vice up.

I change my blade quite reqularly and only use Bi-Metal blades that run about 38.00 CAN a peice. I use my saw all the time. I find as the blade gets older the teeth curve and cuase it to dut on a downward angle. I also use a little 5" Sqaure to line the vice up to the blade.
