cheap bandsaws?

are some bandsaws specificly for wood or metal? or does it just depend on the blade installed? i want to get one because sometimes angle grinders are bullshit and i cant always get ---- in the chopsaw :X also shooting hot metal in every corner of the garage sucks. theres plently on craigslist but i dont want to get one thats made for wood

Re: cheap bandsaws?

I'm not an expert but, yes I believe there is a difference. Just like any other saw. One made for metal will have a slower speed and more amperage. As you already know the blades are deeper and the saw must be able to accomodate that difference.

I bought my harbor freight bandsaw about a year ago or so, and it works like a champ for me. One of the best $130 I've ever spent.

You just have to make sure all the bolts are tight and the blade guides are straight and she'll do good work for you. Slow, but methodical.

werd, there is definitely a difference too. If you are on a budget, the HF one works pretty damn good for what it costs, especially if you wait for a sale and use a coupon.

Get the Grizzly.
http://www.grizzly.com/products/4-x-...-Bandsaw/G0622

That motor is about 6x as powerful as the one on the HF.

Search old posts for recommendations and mods.

I have the HF saw too. I have had it for about 3 years. maybe longer. I replaced the motor due to a burn out and its still truckin along.

from my experience the most important thing is how well the clamp/vise works. you dont even realize how pissed off you can get at a tool untill you use a bandsaw with a ---- vise

Walter, I was going to buy the Milwaukee version of that. I had it ordered and it was out of stock so I bought Jeep parts instead. Those things are great.

Re: cheap bandsaws?

i have a 10" compound miter saw got of craigslist almost new for like $40 i just put metal blades in it. made a whole dp/exhaust with it just fine doin pie cuts. only thing that sucks about it is after a few cuts the 10" blade doing 3" pipe the motor hits the pipe on the right side on the down swing and sometimes will not make the cut all the way :3 once i tried to use it with the sawdust bag on it and it caught fire instantly and burned up :1

its to hard trying to shove half welded ---- into it though i think a bandsaw would be easier

Re: cheap bandsaws?

mitter saws are awsome but, damn those blades are expensive. HF bandsaw is on sale right now for 180$ i think.....i dont know how you guys got it for 130-150$

Going to pick up a lightly used HF band saw for 100$ next week ;D

Re: cheap bandsaws?

id spend the money and get the grizzly or an enco. i had a harborfeight saw for less than a year and the pivot on it broke. the whole top of the saw rolled right off and almost broke my toe.

any band saw vert/horz whatever is good so long as it has belts and pullys on it. this way the motor can be easly replaced and you can get different pullys to change speeds

Re: cheap bandsaws?

ive used a lot of grizzly woodworking tools and they are built pretty nice

+1 i'd even pay that if it works OK for exhaust/dp/manis..

post link.

Re: cheap bandsaws?

my miter saw takes $3 10" metal cut off blades same hole size as the wood blades there just by the metal chop saws at the store

Re: cheap bandsaws?

5/8" arbor
nelson get a 20% off HF coupon and use it when the HF saw drops to $150 is how you get them for $130 out the door.

I still STRONGLY recommend buying the grizzly model. We own a dozen big grizzly tools and i also own the HF 4*6 bandsaw. Let me tell you... My 14.4v Makita drill stepped down on a fresh battery pack has more torque than the "1/3hp" HF motor does. That's just how bad the motor alone sucks Not to mention the pissy deck, bearings/surfaces, china spring, suspenion, the table that will literally collapse during the install and almost kill you..........
Everyone making a 4*6" bandsaw uses the same basic design, but a Grizzly or Jett, even an Enco, is night and day better and safer than the HF crap.

I honestly state anyone that can't swing the $100-150 difference between the HF and the Grizzly saw is not going to be using the saw enough to justify buying a bandsaw in the first place. Stick to 14" chop saws.

so is grizzly like high end HF then

http://www.grizzly.com/products/Port...-w-Stand/G8692 thats pretty cheap and it says it comes with a stand tempted to get that so i could save room but the portable one might be hard to use

Toysrme 12-19-2008 12:32 PM

Re: cheap bandsaws?

Grizzly was formerly made in tawain, factories moved to china but they maintained their quality after a short teething problem.

Their stuff is more a solid middle class and above depending on what you want to spend. Make really good motors too, used a 1/3HP grizzly motor on an old Delta upright drillpress, worked great.

Re: cheap bandsaws?

May aswell not buy a portable bandsaw for what we do. It's hard enough to make a LONG collector on a 4*6 bandsaw. Youd be stuck doing nothing but cutting pipe off square with a portable.

ya thats what i thought, doing a collector in that thing would suck. well ---- me out of more garage space

i have never had one issue with my HF bandsaw. i got it on sale for $140 like 6 years ago. the legs are a little flimsy and one of these days i am going to make some new ones and possibly add on some liguid cooling but i have used it almost weekly as long as i have had it. i have probably spent 3 times what i paid for it in blades. i have no complaints
