Cam gears
 

Well i was browsing ebay and saw these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ACURA...spagenameZWDVW


I wanna make a set, and even have 2 nice chunks of 4" diameter, 3/4" thick billit aluminum here to use... I was wondering how you guys would improve on this guys already simplistic design, I can see one dissadvantage of his design would be the minimum contact surface on the allen bolt that could lead to slippage...


also 2 other questions.... what would be the negative affects of cam gears a bit heavier than stock? (allthough i suppose adding some aluminum to a stock one can be no heavier than some aftermarket ones out there) and also if i was only to make one cam adjustable for starters what one would yield more benefits on an LS... intake or exhuast?

With cam gears being so cheap, and not many people tuning with them, I can't see why you would want to make some. If your just wanting to be creative, sure.

If he flips those cam gear over, you will see that they are stock cam gears with the legs cut.
So now you have 4 extra bolts that can come loose/strip, adding more weight, chance of making it out of balance, not centered, incorrect timing marks.

ooh i understand that they are cheap and not that affective, but i have the aluminum and cam gears here i got for free. i like the fact of using teh stock gear and cutting it... but would like to try and design something more reliable that this guy did...

i just wanna do this to amuse myself through the long cold winter were having here in Nova Scotia, i figure its free and i have access to teh machines whenever i want so why not give it a go, if all else fails its something pretty to sit on my computer desk

and i see it as a next level of building things i can challange myself to

Very good points, and even more reason to use the machines you have access to to build something else. I'd lean toward a marble release for my bigwheel so I can finally make it around the block.

just go for it like you said if all else fails you'll have a couple of paper weight's

cam gears are very effective when running big cams, I run skunk to cams and I use cam gears to dial them in to get the best vtec engagement I can and also power band. I advance the intake side 3 degrees for best results.

but why would you make them when you can get a set for less than $100
