bumper fab, off at the powdercoaters now

Been building this at work, have about 2 hours into it and it went to powdercoat. Will be back Tuesday...

Started with these brackets I made about 1 year ago:
http://gitout.com/v-web/gallery/d/15214-1/bumper10.jpg

Then I cut an 8' chunk of 1.75" OD x .095" Wall round tube and bent this up and tacked it into place.

Some more shots

After that I capped the ends, ground them flush, and put the DA to work
http://gitout.com/v-web/gallery/d/15342-1/bump03.jpg

Then I bent an upper stinger, and coped the ends to fit, welded in some struts from bracket to the ends (1" OD x .083" Wall). I also took a piece of 12gauge HRPO and set it on the top. Said and done I am pretty happy with the end result. I might modify it to accept a winch someday.

Last thing to do once it gets back is build an aluminum skid for the bottom and wire my lights up.

Coming next! Side bars or Rear Bumper...

Im going to make another rear bumper. If I sell this one first. The Rock Rails came out nice though. My tubing notcher came in handy for the rails. I am going to start my bumper when I catch up on manifolds.

Re: bumper fab, off at the powdercoaters now

I love our tubing coper/notcher at work. It's basically a large sander with various sized wheels for the front and a 36 grit belt... I notched my front stinger in about 30 seconds.

My sliders will be quite a bit different than that. I am going to mimic the tube style my bro in law makes, they are built with 1.75" OD x .120" wall.

Trust me, if I had to choose between a hole saw notcher in my own shop and the belt coper 15 minutes at a time at work. I'd totally choose the notcher.

Do you ever worry about hitting someone with that bumper. I can see why its good for off road, its just i could see that making a real mess of a small child.

I don't really ever worry about hitting people. In 12 years of driving I've had once incident recently that almost put me in a rear end situation, and I chose to eat the guard rail instead. If I was gonna hit a vehicle small enough to kill a small child in the backseat, for one I am probably gonna go up over the ass end cause of my skid, and it really isnt gonna matter what I have strapped to the front of the Jeep that thing is gonna eat a Geo Metro anyways.

Any other possibilities are going to involve children out of a vehicle, and they shouldnt be in the street in the first place.

If you hit a child with the stock bumper the carnage will be the same.

Its funny where threads go. You'd think a bumper fab thread would have questions and comments about a bumper, but no...

Instead we're discussing running over small children. Crazy place internet forums O0

no, i expect it on every forum, the off topic banter on threads, while a little more odd here, happens everywhere.

i just think its funny, you never know where a thread is gonna go...

I would Have something.. just bolt on.. for it to be lower.. then take it off when your Off Roadin'.. :y

But Still.. I think I just want to see more Nice work! ;D

I'd be going up onto just about any small car with or without this bumper, I'm at 4.5" of lift and sitting on tires that are like 3-4" taller than stock

:y I agree

I had a stinkyfab style tube bumper on my old truck, thing was ------- indestructible, came in handy many times off road. 'Specially when I got drunk and let my friends goat me into running into and over trees... Ah, good times.

Oh btw, nice job on the bumper and those sliders, look pretty badass

With bumpers like that I'd be too tempted to drive around and hit cars like they did in that hummer driving through Iraq.

You need some tires, that's like 33"-35" tire lift. Toss a 33 on there.

Good rear end tho, you're ready to rock. Personally I decided to go away from a roof rack, I'd like to keep my COG as low as possible.

Bought it As is. The tires are Brand new so The will stay for now. I want the rack for the full size spare tire, and the Snowboards. The XJ is kinda a winter beater with an alternate motive.

The body is 100% Mint, only 3 years on the paint, and I thought it was a decent deal for 4200 CAN.

Bumper work looks nice, I like the way you capped the ends, came out clean.

Looks like you might have an alignment problem :P

Rough Country 4.5" coils, add a leaf, and Rough Country Shackle. This saturday will have my longarm kit in it. Swaybar disconnects I made myself.

The CB antenna is a 3 footer, strapped to a Cobra CB with an RF gain, very nice unit. I paid about $120 for the CB, antenna, cable, bracket for antenna, spring. I coulda got it for less on ebay, but I paid for the service that comes with it from D&R communications here in town.

Nice pics and locations!! I hoping to do some good wheeling but my friend's wife decided to roll his 4runner into a tree. So if he doesn't sell it for parts it turning into a canvas topper.

We don't have sweet mountain trails though, mostly swap and bushland.
