boosted sandrail on a budget

this is kind of an ongoing fun little project, the first one we've done so it's not pretty yet.

specs: 1800cc vw bus engine & transaxle, engine has a 2600cc '914 porsche' stroker kit in it, holley 440 4-barrel carb, unknown chrysler T3 that was laying around the shop, custom tube frame sandrail, 100% fabricated in house.

it needs paint, a boost gauge, and a bit more tuning, and a clutch! hah!

it's fun though!

That thing is sweet. I wish there were places around here that something like that could be driven....

that thing is pure Ghetto! Top job, how does it idle and drive with the suck through? Iv had a few suck through and draw throughs and had mixed results.

that thing is ------- sweet. :y

you are going to have to put counter weights up front to keep the wheels on the ground. (thats not a joke)

Re: boosted sandrail on a budget

it idles really well, well except when you change the fuel pump and forget a vise grip pinching the fuel line haha.
seriously though, it seems to run awesome except for a tiny little dead spot before the 2nd butterfly opens which my dad says he can cure. we're also going to paint it so it doesn't rust and ---- and maybe so it looks a little better. heh.

yea once we get a clutch that can handle the power i'm sure it will stand up a lot more. my dad took it up to the pavement last night and stood it up for 2 gears heh

Keep an eye on your turbo bearings, I’ve read that some of them don’t like being in contact with gasoline / air charge. I’ll try to find where I got this info and send it to you, they suggested solutions for that. I recall it was a motorcycle turbocharging book.

Rock on!

link it up. not that we could be accused of giving two shits about the turbo, like i said i have a whole pile of them at the shop.
draw through setups have been around for ages though, people talk about the gasoline mixture 'pitting' the impeller blades and such, but for the ammount that this thing is driven i am not overly worried about it. i'd still like to see if people have solutions for it and such though.

caged 06-14-2007 09:27 AM

Re: boosted sandrail on a budget

i dont think you would have a problem with pitting because of how long the intake is. iv also heard that the fuel can damage the seals but iv never had a problem.

yea, i forgot my good camera at home so i had the wife tape it with my cellphone. the quality sucks and you can't even see my wheelie :(
but it's better than nothing and maybe next time i'll remember to take the camera.

What size diameter/thickness pipe did you use for the frame? And what bender was used?

Pretty much, if you can, give us a rundown on how you made the frame. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to use for my 600cc sportbike buggy.

I think the seal problem with draw through setups is depending on if you have a carbon seal or not. I remember reading something about it in a write-up on rebuilding an IHI. It mention draw through setups and the use of a carbon seal or a standard seal. I'm not 100% though.

HMT Sandrail is looking fresh. We are now carrying the Sandcar clutches as well, so let me know if you need one.
We have them available with 2500lb and 3500lb clamp loads. Disks available are 6 puck rigid or Iron.

I thought that there was more information but finally there is not much. Sorry, I thought that I had more to give you but finally I realize I don’t know much. :1

Taken from Joe Haile, Motorcycle turbocharging, supercharging and nitrous oxide.

The guy says that Rayjay turbos are OK for draw through, their seal is OK. IHI can be rebuilt with special seals that you can order.

Good luck with your setup, have nice wheelies!
