big fiberglass repair

19 Attachment(s)
here is my latest poject at work

this planes engine quit and the guy landed in the grass on an interstate highway. the ground was soft and the landing gear broke. then to top it off this part was severly damaged in shipping to us for repair.

we have the rest of the plane but this is the only part that is finished right now

i dont have any before pics but the pics start with cutting things open to really see the damage and then the repair process.

the small perfectly round holes were cut for acess with a borescope to look for internal damage. this part did have one of the wooden ribs broken loose. the bigger square hole was cut to have access to make the repair

Wow that is great work. You are a ricers dream. You can fix your own Vader4000 battler bumper if you hit a curb.

Re: big fiberglass repair

i could make doors if i had enough interest. is that what you are getting at? i could do an empty shell pretty easily. then you just cut holes for hinges and latches. i dont have the time to do bolt on doors

Re: big fiberglass repair

damn thats nice...so do you only paint the repaired spots afterwards or do you do the whole thing?

Not for me I already have my fiberglass doors but things such has doors,1 piece front ends and rear hatches are for the friends of speed not body kit homo's so you will deal with mostly cool people

Re: big fiberglass repair

Yeah doors, rear hatchs etc. would be nice.

I would assume it wouldnt cost much to make either

Nice work by the way :D

Very impressive. I would think that it'd be difficult to graft in the fiberglass cloth without it showing through after a while.

i have always wanted to make a once piece front end but i have no use for one. i dont go to the track too often. maybe i will give it a shot and see how it sells. i already have a mail order business so that part would be easy

I know some of the Red Bull Air Race pilots, like Nicolas Ivanoff, are flying the new Extra 300SR. Are there any plans to make a full production version or are they just going to keep it to 'one-offs' for VIPs

im not licensed to get paid to fly, nor do i have enough flight hours to be insurable to be paid to fly. i do taxi the planes around, do full power runups, and seat in brake pads.

i know Mike Goulian. he flies an extra. i also know Patty Wagstaff, hell i was going to ramble off some names and then realized its just way too many. lol

anyway, they were planning to make a production race plane but their race planes are shitty. they just arent fast enough. i have yet to see an extra make it to the finals, or even the semi-finals if i remember correctly. the Extra's flying now are the 2nd attempt at a race plane. the first one made a great aerobatic plane but was slow. this one is faster but still slow.hopfully they will get their ---- together and make something nice. i wish i could talk Mike Goulian to let me make some fairings for his plane. i see lots of areas where i could make it faster. i dont see him enough to badger him about it though.

just figured i would add that we are the only place in this country to get Extras. other people sell them but they get them though us

You just slap an "EXPERMENTAL" sticker on it and call it good.

not my worry. im not signing it off. lol. we are a factory service center. after a few big repairs the factory just lets us fix stuff without talking to them first.

you should do a how-to-fiberglass write-up. obviously you do damn good work and most of us wouldn't mind learning.

Scott-EP 01-02-2008 06:53 AM

Re: big fiberglass repair

i guess i could, i havent seen many people trying or asking about it so i never thought about it. any ideas on what to make for the write-up? i really dont need to make anything for myself right now but if there is something that a lot of people want i could do it

Re: big fiberglass repair

awkward suggestion maybe, but fiberglass del sol tops might sell like hotcakes, because any other aftermarket lighter replacement I've seen is $$$$$

Scott-EP 01-14-2008 07:28 PM

Re: big fiberglass repair

hmmm......... i could do a top, but i dont know anyone with a del sol. anyone live in FL with one?
