the dark area in thew middle usually means it is not turning on.
my old jackson auto dark woul do this at times, i would just replace the batteries and go on my way.
try replacing the batteries.

Re: auto dim welding helmet - is this normal?
its easy. i use a cheap hood 8-12h a day every week and i get arc eye. my eyes turn dry and very scratchy. i use a practically free jackson shadow or a better helmet and its never a problem. done the HF thing. sucked, didn't work. low battery life and had arc eye as soon as i went from home flux core to welding hours a day. it was a problem.
do what c0mpl3x said. change the battery. the hoods run off the battery most of the time anyway.
no different than the dude taking fish antibiotics to me. the ---- comes from china. no quality control what so ever. they cant make god damned milk thats safe to drink. why anyone want to take rX

If you weld for like 20 minutes in a sitting once a week then you might not notice it - doesn't mean there isn't an additive effect. All I know looking through a ching chong helmet now that I am used to using my Optrel or Miller elite makes me feel suicidal.

yes i have, but not welding all day or anything, the miller elite had a diagnal line i noticed, the china one has a horizontal one. neither look as good to me as looking through my non-dimming $20 helmet
i looked into it somemore, basicly all helmets that are ANSI rated will protect you from %100 UV and IR light %100 of the time if they fail to dim or not. but im sure you guys weld alot more then me so your probly just speaking from expience and are probly right. but with the way people are today about everything i just have a hard time beliving in a place where i cant even smoke in a bar anymore, they can sell something that would so obviousy cause danger to your eyes
also after strolling through the local HF, this mask is the EXACT same one they sell with blue flames for $39 :1 funny it has so many good reviews on the northern tool website
