Default arc welder for mock up.

so I'll be mocking up my charge pipes and flanges pretty soon. I have a guy at a muffler shop that will mig for 2 bucks per weld, but he gets kinda pissed if I come there with everything all in pieces so i'd like to have a 2 or 3 tacks on everything when I go In and just say seam it up. Just wondering if this should be okay for a mock up.

How bad of an idea would it be to arc weld the whole thing? I'm not concerned with looks, as long as it will hold around 13 psi I'll be good.

Thanks

i am ging to arc my whole setup. i think laying down tacks would suck because of the scatch start but should be fine just hammer off the slag

Arc welding is usually for thicker material and heavier beads. It'll be hard to start and stop alot. Plus, if it sticks you'll probably break your tack while you're trying to break the stick free. Also, you'll find yourself burning through the pipe alot with stick welding. It can be done, but is it really worth it? I would only use it as your very, very last option.

well I didn't go buy an arc welder. We have two at my work, but one is a pretty nice miller one. I have been messing around with that alot on putting together pipes and have figured out how to get some good penetration without burning holes through the metal. I think I'll go ahead and just do it and see what happens. If it leaks, then i'll just use a band saw to cut at the welds and take it to a shop, but I might as well try savin a little dough, since I already have the rods and welder. I'll post pics when I'm done w/ it.

Thanks

i think you will be fine i use 1/16 rods and they work good on the pepboys exhaust piping that i have been welding. if you haven't used the arc before your first welds will most likly have slag in it but you will soon find the right angle so there is no slag

If your work has a welder then is probably and a tank of two sitting around. You can buy a tig torch on ebay for like $40 and convert one of those arc welders. Mack sure its on DC. Fluxcore or shielding gas would be required. use any tank to exchange for the gas you need at napa or your local welding suppy company.

Theyre AC arc welders Already thought about this about 3 months ago, too bad though. I'll be fine with the arc as long as it functions, I'm cool
