AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

me and my friend just bought a mig welder, we are total noobs, we've been playin with it trying to learn, but its not easy. At first he was just burning holes in the pipe, then we started to get it a little bit. But its still very sloppy and not easy to weld things together. I mean sure tack welding is easy... but say I had to weld a pipe to another. How would I make a clean weld? HELL, even a weld that would hold! Slow zig zags?

What are we doing wrong? Any tips or advice?

Clean. Turn up the heat, slow down the wire. It's 90% prep work, 10% welding.

What kinda prep work?

btw its a non-gas welder.

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

Grind it/sand it till it's bare metal is best. If it's dirty, it won't weld well.

I can lay nice beads with a fluxwelder, but I sandblast the parts clean first, then wash them, then weld them. And fitment has to be near perfect.

You want the cleanest surface possible to weld.If you have a flapper wheel for the angle grinder it works great.Just grab some old pipe to practice on and play around until you find the right mix of heat&speed.
Here is a link to download the Haynes welding manual whiich has some usefull tips etc.http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3286331

If it's a non gas welder, than put it off to the side until you can get a gas one. Flux core is bullshit.

Welding= F1 racing
Flux core= riding a powerwheels practicing to run the race (F1= welding)

Fluxcore = HMT

anybody can gas weld
fluxcore is skill, that ---- is all over the place
its like trying to tame a mature monkey

Really? So gas is easier? Cause we could take it back and get a gas welder.

yea im getting the hang of the welder at my school but we dont have flux core or sheilding gass but i can still make a bead lol and ive been welding 5 days for 50 mins each day

if he's burning holes through the pipe, why would you tell him to turn up the heat??

Minor Threat 03-23-2006 07:26 PM

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

Because he also said it was sloppy. 9 times out of 10 when I've worked with fluxcore, sloppiness was because I didn't have the heat up enough. If he's burnign through pipe, he's just moving too slow.

fluxcore owns

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

I pwn with fluxcore. Ya'll have seen my welds bitches 8) I say, turn teh heat lower, and play with wire speed until you get it flowing right. You generall ymove in a crecent moon shape as you see the metal turning red. Another way to determine how fast to move is how fast the wire is coming out the end (assuming you have it set up correctly to melt the wire).

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

Its hard to weld thin pipe too start off. I would get some thicker scrap metal and practice laying some beads. Nothing pisses me off more then burning a hole in pipe, im very impatient and just want to pull the trigger and go :y

I recommend welding without a mask

yea go with the gas. and you could try the zig-zag motion, or try doing really little loops.

flux isnt so bad. i tried it out yesterday for the first time evaR. It's easy as pie :y. just play with the settings and you'll get it down.

get a can of anti spatter if you wanna be baller

thermal 04-01-2006 11:48 PM

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

Believe it or not, after a while flux core can be almost splatter free. It just really depends on how you control the heat and feed at the same time......

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

YA, man you gonna have problems learning on exhaust piping, start with 1/4" steel you won't burn though that unless you got a mean machine. Once you get a piece of thick steel, just put the setting somewhere in the middle, start welding and once you see the puddle do little ZZZZ's or CCCCC's and try and keep the puddle the same size and the ZZZZ's consistant(same size and same distance apart) if it spaltters turn the wire speed down if it is hard to get the puddle to stay the same size slow down or turn the voltage up.

And if you can get a gas mig I would recomend it, alot cleaner welds and less splatter.

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

Antisplatter works pretty good but damn that ---- kicks out some mad smokage and smell nasty. Try spraying it down with wd40 and that kinda works like a antisplatter and gives you a cool look to what your welding. lol. It's just mastering the controls on what to adjust it to. I usually start out with it spooling faster and the voltage turned down so I don't burn a hole right away and then turn it up. I only have like a high and low on my HF so it's just getting the speed setting right. You want it to sound like eggs frying.

Re: AHHHHHHH Help me with welding!

Im not a great welder but the thing I think a lot of people forget is - welding is aobut WATCHING what you are doing. Keep a sharp eye on the work area and what's happening with the pool of molten metal.
