Before you place your patch treat the metal with a Rust remover like Naval Jelly, the use a Weld-Through Primer. Place your patch, weld it, the use a Zinc Primer or Surface sealer((NASTY ---- on the lungs!!!). The Base Primer, Base Coat/Topcoat, and then clear depending on the type of paint your using.

WOW! I didn't know we had this many body guys on here. I think the best way to get rid of rust is to cut it out and then sandblast the area, weld and then fill, sand, prime. If its on a seam use seam sealer so the water doesn't get to it. After that I usually use an undercoat from oriellys in the fender wells and ---- that is on the back side. Works well. The first car that I did was a crx and to this day about 4 years later there is still no rust on it. I swear by sandblasting. It gets where you cant even see. Oh and keep your hands from touching the metal. You hands have oil and acids that will rust the metal within a day.

Sandblasting is not the proper way. You run the risk of overheating the panel from the friction and warping it. We learned this on our 70 Dart. But you need a GOOD sandblaster to worry about this.

The best way is not even worry about sandblasting or a wire wheel. CUT IT OUT completely, then weld in a new patch.

Well if your were sandblasting properly you would never run into over heating the panel. Sounds like you stayed in one spot to long. I have never warped a panel and I mostly work on hondas.
