some chips don't id. what speed are they? i can never get the slower atmels to id properly, but they burn/verify/read and work fine. if your only problem is not being able to id the chip, it's not a big deal at all. as long as you can read the chip back after you program it, it's fine.

hahaha....the willem no longer pwnz me

IDK what speed they are....i know it matters when they are in the ECU but does it effect burning?

Re: willem (enhanced/dual power) burner how to! *56k/dsl=fucked!*

what's the exact number on the top of the chip? and no, unless they're incredibly slow, you won't notice much difference in programming/erasing them. i've used 250ns chips that burn fine and run fine in the ecu, and those are pretty ------- slow in comparison to the regular 70-90ns chips.

Not really sure. My dads DSL is faster than my cable too. But this is terribly off-topic.

Nice write-up teg. Went to a maotes for ease in the car with one cable, but you make it easier for people to save a little $$ and still get what they need.

Re: willem (enhanced/dual power) burner how to! *56k/dsl=fucked!*

I just bought a Willem dual power burner from www.mcumall.com. I use a AT29c256, so I followed this write up, but it's not working, it won't recognize the AT29c256.

I tried to switch Willem to PCB3, did'nt work. Tried several DIP configuration. When I click "Electonic ID", sometimes it show me "-----" and sometime it show "Sanyo", but never an AT29c256.

I think I've setup burner properly, jump pin #3 and #31, when I test hardware, it show "hardware present". When I try to programm chip, I got an error: "Write sector 0"

The chip was already burned on another burner (don't know wich one) and it work on my car. Just want to put a new .bin on it, but I can't program chip.

Do you have an idea what i'm doing wrong? Or maybe burner is not working properly? Could you tell me if there is something to do to test burner?

For the moment, I got only 1 chip, so I can't test with another one...

Thanks

On mine it doesn't recognize it as at29c256 either just that silly ----- icon, just make sure it doesn't say sanyo and if it does your jumper is mostlikely too big or too small. Let the jumper(#3) touch pin 1 of the CHIP and that will ensure a proper jump (with #31). If you're burning and it gives an error, again its just the jumper. General rule for me is if you can read the .bin and open it properly then you will be able to erase and burn the chip. If it still doesn't work go through the write-up again carefully and make sure your BURNER board jumpers are correct and that you set the dip switch like in the pics up top.

What timing! I got my willems in the mail today and then the couple or so times I come to the EM forum I see this right away!I was like ??? when I opened my box and just had a usb and serial cable and the burner and nothing else and was "oh ----! What the hell do I do with this thing now? lol" What a life saver! 8) Good going Kev.

Re: willem (enhanced/dual power) burner how to! *56k/dsl=fucked!*

I've searched for a fix and haven't had too much luck. A few posts came close to it but never really solved my problem.

I am using 0.97g software with an SST27SF512 chip. It doesn't ID the chip which I've concluded doesn't terribly matter. It erases fine and loads the bin file fine. When I burn the chip it comes back with an error:

"Error at 0x000000 Chip = 0xFF buffer = 0x01"

With the setting to 'Willem' the DIPs are backwards and I've tried setting them to the picture and according to the numbers. Neither have worked.

Would switching to PCB3 solve my problem?

You need to adjust the jumpers. They are still in the position to erase. You should reposition them like in picture number 8 on page one of the illustrations or you can remove the outer one and leave the inner two in place.

nufan 08-14-2005 09:25 PM

Re: willem (enhanced/dual power) burner how to! *56k/dsl=fucked!*

I attempted both ways. Removing outer jumper after erase and switching erase jumper to AM29C256 setting. No success.

Anyone else using SST chips? What steps did you follow? All I can find is Projekteg's and Green's writeups and both use AT29c256 chips.

Re: willem (enhanced/dual power) burner how to! *56k/dsl=fucked!*

You are using the wrong setting for your chip. You need to identify the chip first.
1. click on device
2. click on EPROM Electrical Erase
3. click on SST27SFxxx
4. click on SST27SF512

Make adjustments to the twelve white keys on the burner based on the picture after you've identified the chip. Note the numbers on the screen is in reverse order to the ones on the burner. Moving left to right, on the screen the numbers run 12 to 1 but on the burner it is 1 to 12. Check at the top of the screen if it shows PCB3. If it does, click on it and it should change to Willem. You are now ready to erase and burn.

Re: willem (enhanced/dual power) burner how to! *56k/dsl=fucked!*

I'm back with more questions. Well the same one really.

Okay, so I am pretty familiar with computer equipment and I can follow directions well but I'm missing something here. I went thru that thread about the other guy who had probs with his SST (his burner was different than mine incidentally) and no luck. I even walked away for a day to clear the head as xenocron suggested.

I even added the 8000 offset, which I'm not sure is necessary or not. It seems logical.

I tried different combonations and changed up the bin I was burning and still the same error.

My LPT port is set to ECP+EPP (whichever it is but it's the one with two) and I don't believe I have TWAIN drivers running.

In the picture under the other post xeno was under PCB3 instead of Willem. I've tried that also.

When burning under Willem, you set the DIPs by the numbers right? Regardless of orientation on the screen you turn 12 to the OFF position and not just up to resemble the picture?

This contraption shall not defeat me!!! Try again tomorrow. Thx for the help so far, I'm sure it's something small.

Have you tried the 0.97j software?

nufan 08-19-2005 08:21 PM

Re: willem (enhanced/dual power) burner how to! *56k/dsl=fucked!*

Just got done trying 0.97j software. Did that in Willem 'mode' and in PCB3 mode for s&g's. On top of both modes I also did with and without the "8000" offset. I did remember to put the jumper on to erase and take it off to burn everytime so its not that. Any more ideas or hunches? Anything is greatly appreciated. Who knows, I might just have the Y-49 equivalent of a burner or computer for that matter.

Post screen shots of the errors you are getting...its so hard to troubleshoot this crap over the internet because we have no idea of the actual process you are using.

Using O.97ja

You have to ERASE the SST chip before buring a file to it. Also, you need to set your offset to 08000.

I dunno....you are erasing them before trying to burn? Every time....

Sometimes, it wont make it all the way through a burn...you might have to try 2 or 3 times. But you have to erase everytime before trying to reburn.

Same two errors. I erase prior to every burn. Is the offset 08000 or 8000? And does Radio Shack carry the AT29C256 chips?

I always type 08000 and hit enter

Radio Shack def does not carry the AT29C...hell, they are no longer being made and are becoming increasingly hard to find.

I'm very desperate but im not a housewife! ;D

If you could email the pictures to me, I'll upload to my host so you can update this. pm me if you're interested
