3 questions:
1- Does the PLX allow a narrowband output to the ECU and simultaneously output Wideband readings to their logging software? My intention is to get all the info into excel (along with ecucontrol info).
2- What about the Techedge?

Yes and no. Yes it has simulated narrowband output while also having full wideband output (two seperate outputs that can be used simultaneously). PLX however, does not have integrated datalogging. It would be the job of your engine management software to datalog.
2- What about the Techedge?
It's OK... Has more "features" than PLX and costs about $150 more. You can get the "DIY" version that has over 200 solder points to assemble, but it is much cheaper.

I haven't dealt with them before. But USBMOD is gimp. I've talked to Nick (ECUControl author) and he says it really lags out, probably because of shitty drivers. Basically, the drivers used to install it make a virtual COM port, and interface our software apps interface with that COM port. But, due to the drivers, it lags.

The USBMOD1 is setup for hardware handshaking out of the box. Failure to tie the hardware handshaking pins to GND/+5v appropriately will result in odd behavior. I bought my USBMOD1 from Saelig (www.saelig.com) for <$29 I think... They're the main US distributor for FTDI.
I know for a fact that the FTDI chips work well from using them in other devices (albeit, under linux). Playing around + getting the USBMOD1 to work right is on my list of things to do... I'll post up a writeup on the PGMFI wiki when I'm done.

A new controller is being developed. http://members.shaw.ca/megasquirt2/PWC/index.htm
It addresses all the design faults of the currently available cheap WB units, which don't compensate at all for environmental changes (pressure, temperature and such)
However it's not ready yet. I was going to get a techedge WBO2 but I'm halting all wideband thoughts myself until the PWC comes out.
