Wideband questions
Hi,
I did a search, but didn't really find what i'm looking for. I want to install a wideband o2 sensor, but didn't realize they were so expensive. What is the least expensive o2 sensor you guys have found? does "least expensive" mean it sucks, or is there really a difference between wb sensors? Do they really become less acurate over time, and if so, what is their approximate lifespan? Lastly, I was thinking about building my own homemade air/fuel meter... I could save $30-$40, but are the widely available blueprints for ghetto air/fuel meters realiable enough to tune by? Or is it worth the extra money to just buy the "pretty" gauge? Thanks guys. |

Your best bet is to go with one of 3 "cheaper" units, and based on features you need, pick between them.
PLX M-300 - http://www.plxdevices.com Innovate - http://www.innovatemotorsports.com TechEdge - http://www.wbo2.com As for being less accurate over time, depends on the sensor. The LM1 is a better sensor than the LSU4 because after an hour or so of beating on it, it gets really hot and less accurate. All you have to do is wait for it to cool down. Then have back at it. The Bosch LSU4 is only about $60, where as the LM1 is about $160. (Some of the kits mentioned above come with the sensor. (I will be adding a question giving information about WBO2 to the Engine Management FAQ since this has been coming up a lot recently... look there later today for more detail.) |

So on that link PLX they have a product called M series, it hooks to a Auto Meter A/F gauge, and they claim it turns it in to a wideband is that true? anyone every try this?

With thier converting device it displays wideband information on the Autometer. nothing more. You still need the WB O2 kit.

Hah, no really, I've spoken with Jayson for quite some time on the phone and he seems to be a cool cat. I ordered my PLX Tuesday, and it'll be here Friday. He's on the ball! He's got lots of good info to share just ask. ...oh, and when you do ask, make sure you already own the car. LOL@Jayson! |

Got my PLX from forced air yesterday, had it up and running 2hrs later ;D, then stayed up till around 3am tuning.
I dont know how I made it this far without one, Im in love. |

3 questions:
1- Does the PLX allow a narrowband output to the ECU and simultaneously output Wideband readings to their logging software? My intention is to get all the info into excel (along with ecucontrol info). 2- What about the Techedge? 3- Has anyone ever dealt with these sites? http://www.futurlec.com/USB.shtml They have the USBMOD1 for $29.90 + $3.00 shipping. http://www.hobbyengineering.com/SectionIN.html They have the USBMOD1 (in stock 3/17/04) for $33.00 + $6.00 shipping. |

Yes and no. Yes it has simulated narrowband output while also having full wideband output (two seperate outputs that can be used simultaneously). PLX however, does not have integrated datalogging. It would be the job of your engine management software to datalog. 2- What about the Techedge? It's OK... Has more "features" than PLX and costs about $150 more. I haven't dealt with them before. But USBMOD is gimp. I've talked to Nick (ECUControl author) and he says it really lags out, probably because of shitty drivers. Basically, the drivers used to install it make a virtual COM port, and interface our software apps interface with that COM port. But, due to the drivers, it lags. |

The USBMOD1 is setup for hardware handshaking out of the box. Failure to tie the hardware handshaking pins to GND/+5v appropriately will result in odd behavior. I bought my USBMOD1 from Saelig (www.saelig.com) for <$29 I think... They're the main US distributor for FTDI.
I know for a fact that the FTDI chips work well from using them in other devices (albeit, under linux). Playing around + getting the USBMOD1 to work right is on my list of things to do... I'll post up a writeup on the PGMFI wiki when I'm done. |

A new controller is being developed. http://members.shaw.ca/megasquirt2/PWC/index.htm
It addresses all the design faults of the currently available cheap WB units, which don't compensate at all for environmental changes (pressure, temperature and such) However it's not ready yet. I was going to get a techedge WBO2 but I'm halting all wideband thoughts myself until the PWC comes out. |
