why does turbo get red hot
hey first off im runnig a td04 13c turbo off of a volvo. it is watercooled and oil but im not running the water through it. I heard people do it but im not sure if its a good idea. so the thing is the hot exhaust side of the turbo get red hot. it looks like you could see through it almost. And sometimes my exhaust manifold gets red hot. im just wondering if anyone experienced it before or maybe somewone could tell me what im doing wrong.
thanks |
Re:why does turbo get red hot
maybe u are running too lean?
|
Re:why does turbo get red hot
sometimes its from running lean, but other times its just from the exhaust gasses being hot as ---- for an extended period of time. Remember the gasses comming out of your motor are in the neighborhood of 1300F. That small turbine housing isn't letting the exhaust flow that easily so it retains the heat in the manifold more.
Your cool, its not that big of a deal. |
Re:why does turbo get red hot
I learned from the Turboedit course that High EGts are mostly cause by bad timing and running lean, but alot of turbos run red hot, so your probly ok, or gona blow, it's hard to tell, lol.
the water cooling on your turbo is mostly ther to prevent the oil from burning inside the turbo, you can run with out it butt make sure after you've run your car hard that you let it and the turbo cool down for a couple minutes after. you dont want oil sitting in a red hot turbo. |
Re:why does turbo get red hot
its perfectly normal , dont trip. :D

Re:why does turbo get red hot
Curious as to how much timing your pulling out in boost?
|
Re:why does turbo get red hot
I want to see a picture of it, taken at night, with no flash. :D

Re:why does turbo get red hot
If the turbo is glowing I wonder if the pistons would be glowing too?
|
Re:why does turbo get red hot
Different metal.. I wouldn't think the pistons would glow.
When metal gets hot enough to glow, it starts to break down. Your pistons would have to be stronger than that.. I would think. |
Re:why does turbo get red hot
a DSM guy i know was talking about being able to see the turbine wheel spining inside the housing :o :o :o
btw im thinking that why my manifold cracked, not enough timing... |
