Why is car running rich.

I will start with saying that I am in no way blaming this on TurboEDIT. I have a feeling that this is a mechanical problem with the car due to the person that started this project.

89 crx si, td05h, dsm 450s, external wg @7 psi, smic, 1g dsm BOV, TurboEDIT. Still not building boost-another topic, another post.

First off the car was using an Apexi SAFC but when I did a sensor check, I didn't get a reading for the RPM or MAP sensor and the car ran rich (all the way rich on my a/f gauge) so i said ---- it, and had Xenocron chip/basemap the ecu.

Put the ECU back in and the car is still running all the way rich, no big deal, I got the basemap from Xenocron and leaned it out by 5%, burned a new chip, put the chip in, and the a/f gauge didn't move and the car isn't running any differently. Could this be something mechanical, if so what could this be? BTW when I'm datalogging i do get a reading for RPM.

Re: Why is car running rich.

Are you throwing any codes? If you are, deal with that first. Otherwise, continue.

You really shouldn't make any changes based on what a narrowband gauge shows you. "Rich" can literally mean anything from 14.3:1 all the way down to "bathing in fuel".

Is the car actually running poorly, or are you just concerned about the narrowband readings? Small changes to a mostly-correct vacuum map won't make a whole lot of difference as the O2 trim routine is going to be trying its best to hold you at stoich.

I'm not throwing any codes. And yes, the car is running rough.
All I want to do is just get the car running nice enough to get it to the guy with the dyno across town.

OK guys, I think it's time for a Tuning specific FAQ.

Rory, Teg, Xeno, and anyone else for that matter.. PM questions you'd like to see in the Tuning FAQ.

I.E. - What is narrowband? Why does my car run like ---- after installing X program? What is a basemap how do I make one? What are some tools I should consider when wanting to tune my car? How do I tune? ..so on so forth.. Lets knock this thing out and stop these threads.

Re: Why is car running rich.

I know the difference between narrowband and wideband, I'm not saying my car runs like ---- because of the program, I would have made my own basemap if i had excel, as for tuning I know the basics, but I don't have a wideband 02 or a dyno, I'm not basing this question solely on my narrowband gauge, that is part of it, I'm basing this question mostly on the fact that the car is so rich that it doesn't want to stay alive (and I've already wrecked one set of NGK plugs) I just want to know is there something mechanical that could be causing this problem? I just want the car to run smoothly enough to get it across town to the dyno, I'm not doubting the program or Xeno's basemap, I just don't want to stall out 20 times on my way to the shop. I'm not expecting the car to run perfectly off the basemap or my 5% leaned out version of it, I just want the car to get to the shop, that is all.

If 5% didn't do anything... maybe try another 5%?

I got nothing... :P

Re: Why is car running rich.

if the car starts and runs ok, even if it is a little rich (not judging by the a/f gauge, but rather the smell of fuel and maybe lack of power on bottom end), then it will be fine to drive to where ever you have to go, just try to stay out of boost if you're uncertain of the map. you should not however make any changes to fuel maps without a wideband. if the car starts and runs, drive it to get it tuned.

Re: Why is car running rich.

The car sat over night, and now today we are about 10-15 degrees warmer outside. I went out and started the car, it is running much better, but it idles at around 2,00-2250 RPM and now I am throwing a code: 10 - Intake Air Temperature (IAT). Now what.

Re: Why is car running rich.

Well, a vac. line had come loose from the WG so I put that back on and my idle dropped down to around 1200-1400, but I'm still getting CEL 10.

Screw it, she runs, she can get to the shop. Sorry for being an idiot.
