Where does everyone start?
 

I'm fairly new to this self tuning thing using the free editors, and, I was wondering where everyone starts, like with what maps and what do you all do edit first fuel or timing, I'm just curious as everyone will have different approaches wont they ?

I start with a stock map for the engine you're tuning.. and use my shitty A/F gauge and go from there. I focus on one section at a time.. say 0-3500, 3500-5500, then 5500-rev limit. Generally, I start with fuel, then get to where I'm a tad rich, then increase timing until I knock. Then I retard. If my A/F changed (which is should a bit) I lean out until I get close to my target A/F (obviously not going to be exact due to it being street tuning).

Once you have done this, your "base map" is finished. Now it's time to hit the dyno and extract ALL your remaining power, and round out your maps witha WBO2..

If I use a stock map would it be running rich if was using 450's?

Depends on how you're handing MAP signal.

Some use modified ECUs with an AFC, others use ROMs written to handle positive manifold pressure.. Depends on what you feel like doing.

But yes, on a ROM that is written to positive manifold pressure, it will run rich.

However, with a ROM + AFC, it will be a fine base point.

I'm using ghettodyne (running 8 psi and 450's DOHC ZC) until i get to figure out why i cant use turboedit properly (think its my ECU PP5 soon to be PM6) cant wait to get tuning on TE 2.00 though, looks very nice ;)

Not to intrude on Ghettydyne's market share.. but.. uhm.. Ghettodyne is just an editor, as is TurboEDIT. The ROMs are the same.

Anything that a GhD ROM would run on, a "TurboEDIT ROM" would run on because the ROMs are both one in the same. All coded by members of PGMFI.

Hmm. . . . well i shall give Turboedit a blast at the weekend then when i get some free time, its just when i was using the try17 and PM7try21 bins they ran a bit crap and were throwing a few CEL's at me, the smoothest one that i have used yet was the boost rom that came with v2.3 of ghd, and it only gave me a O2 sensor CEL because my cars wiring loom doesnt support an O2 sensor

That's strange because the Try* series bins are PM6 derived code, as is the GhD (GeorgeHack) bin.

Maybe something in the features of that bin is messing with your ECU in a way a more stock PM6 ROM does not... interesting..
