What ignition/fuel managment should i get?
 

I need your help. My friend has just convinced me to go turbo. Right now i have a 95 civic hatch with a JDM B16A. My plans were to run the turbo off his 92 talon tsi with 5-7psi. I have all of the kit planned out, but i don't know what to do about engine manegment. I will be installing a thicker headgasket to lower the compression (not sure if this is needed)and i am worried about detonation.

I've heard good things about the MSD BTM and the vortec FMU. would running these two units be good enough for what i am planning? This is a very low budget set up, (ie. free turbo, and intercooler) so running a standalone ecu is out of the question. Would upgraded injectors be a good idea? any suggestions would be great.

Don't touch the injectors if you aren't planning on using a piggy back or a stand alone. An FMU will work fine for that low of a boost.

I wouldn't worry about the head gasket or the BTM either. You're only running 5-7psi which is nothing especialy with that tiny ass turbo.

thanks for the help... could i run a bit more boost, like 7-9psi if i do the head gasket to lower compression and get the BTM? the reason i ask is because i really want to get the head gasket and i want to make sure this is as reliable as possible.

Also, I know this is a stupid newbie question, but what kind of hp gains could i expect from running 5-7 psi and also 7-9 psi?

If you want to run more boost and I'm sure you will I would look into uberdata (Cheap DIY stand alone). For less than the price of the FMU, MSD BTM, and fuel pump you could chip your own ecu and it would be a lot safer and allow you to run more boost. You can control fuel and ignition with the uberdata chip. You would just need to upgrade injectors, but DSM 450cc injectors are like $50. This way would be a lot more reliable because you can't tune an FMU at all and I wouldn't go over 7 psi with stock injectors. Tuning and fuel management is the key to reliabilty.

What's the compression ratio of your motor 10.4:1 or something like that? I have no idea how much a headgasket will lower it, but if you could bring it down a little to like 9.4:1 it would give you more room for error in tuning (less chance of detonation). That is a pretty small turbo though so you might not need to do anything. I would do some more research on that before you go out and buy one cause I'm not too sure. A lot of people do boost stock b16's though and power gains will depend on a lot of things.

Yeah, the CR is 10.4:1 so Def want to lower it to be safe. Do I need to hook this chip up to a computer to tune it? Thanks for the help

Yes, you have to buy a programmer and burn chips to use in your ecu. It's very good fuel management if you plan on getting serious.

I didn't realize we were talking about 10.4:1 compression. The head gasket would be a good idea in that case.

Where do you purchase the prgrammer, chip burners, and chips? Can chips be reburned? Also can base maps be downloaded (as in for people's setups not just stock car base maps).

There is a sticky post up top about the batronix programmer and you should be able to find info about programmers and chips at batronix.com. You could proly find somebody to make a basemap for you.
