VTEC not working...I dont think

D16Z6, TurboEdit, NG60, 14b, 450cc's

So I got this here Z6 in my 89 hatch boosting ~8psi. Got a test light hooked up and it comes on at 4500 just like it should.

Should I be able to tell when vtec kicks in y0? I have tried it with vtec turned on and vtec turned off and it makes no bit of difference in sound or performance whatsoever. I don't have an oil pressure gauge hooked up at the moment, but im 99.9% sure its fine. Car ran a 15.5@89mph at the track and I'm convinced the vtec is not working. I removed the solenoid and the screen was as clean as can be. What else can I check/try?

You hooked the test light up to your vtec solenoid wire?

Odd, seems like it should be working.

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

yup wire is hooked up to the solenoid wire. lights up just like it should, turns off when it should but i gots no vtaks. ive tried 'easing' to 4500 so I could hear/feel more effectively and there's nothing. Guess imma take the valve cover off tonite, see if theres some gunk somwhere (doubt it as I run synthetic), and try a spare solenoid I got.

Vtec is very audible, 100% you should hear it if its activating

Maybe you have vtec disabled in TE?

idiot-stick 07-10-2006 03:55 PM

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

nope its definitly activated. solenoid is 100% without a doubt getting 12v @ 4500rpm

lol, not on a single slammer.

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

It's still audible enough to hear.

I rode in a friends car once, to try and see if his Z6 was switching over, and we had to drive right next to a big wall to be able to hear it. So yeah, you can hear it.

take the damn solenoid apart and clean it, make sure the plunger actually moves, etc.... or hook 12v straight to it and listen for the click. on a D its not noticeable at all. and easing to the crossover wont make it engage at the same rpm as WOT will. if you are getting power to it and its not clogged or froze up, its working. if you move the crossover back up in the rpm band closer to stock it will be more noticeable when the low cam is starting to run out of juice.

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

the only single cams you will hear vtec on are vtec-e motors. With a turbo it makes it even more unnoticable

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

I took the solenoid apart and it was clean as a whistle. Hooked it straight upto 12v and i could hear/feel it clicking just fine but i still can't "feel" it engaging. Shouldnt it tear my face off, i mean it IS VTEC after all.

But seriously. Next step, im going to wire in a switch to interrupt the 12v output from the ECU so i can toggle it on and off while in the vtec rpm range.

I've got the wire that is supposed to go to the AC Clutch powering the solenoid. That puts out enough amps, right?

LOL...that's funny :D Biggest noticable difference I've ever seen when vtec stops working on a single slammer is after 5k rpms it doesn't really want to pull at all. If it's a pretty smooth pull right up to 7k then it's probably working.

I couldn't hear my single cam go into VTEC. I know it was because there was a very slight change in tone but with the boost its very hard to notice.

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

w/ certain exhaust you will hear a change at crossover due to the differance in airflow and all at vtec.

can you disable the oil pressure check, etc? you may have a dirty pickup or a nice dent in the pan, check it out

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

you wont here it on that,

Re: VTEC not working...I dont think

IMHO, the ass dyno cannot detect a single cam crossover. vtec on only the intake side, and its not really that big of a TQ change like a B series.

Running TE, so none of that fancy ODB1 check.
Pan has a small dent ~3mm at the bottom, I dont think it's causing any problems. I would like to get an oil pressure gauge on there.

Found a MAJOR boost leak and car is running good now. Power seems to pick up around the VTEC engagement point so for right now I'm gonna assume it's working.

When i get some time, im gonna hook up an oil pressure gauge and hook up a switch to the solenoid so I can fiddle with turning it on/off.

Thanks for the helps :)

My old vtec-e setup kicked over hard on vtec. Ask Jago since he's rocking it now. When it was just a z6 head...umm vtec...whats that? :1

z1 or y5???

y5 head on a z6 shortblock. Jago runs it now. You could cleary here and feel when it turned on. Roller rocking vtec-e heads FTW!! 8)

yeah, 12v to 16v is much more noticeable then low cam to high cam.

It's purty neat

vtec engagement at 2700 ;)

43 mpg highway, 35 city while daily rapeage occurs.

I've only gotten to take 2 runs in my Rex with the Y8, but I don't hear it crossover...Definately notice it though. Pulls nicer than my old a6 :y

this morning it was cool out (for once) and I found a quiet stretch of road with woods on either side and slowly accelerated in 3rd gear. VTEC is definitly working. I feel better O0
