VAFC Install Instructions - Definitive Guide (mostly)

I'm sick of all of these "help me install my VAFC" or "i cant find the manual" crap threads.

So this will be a 'contest' or whatever you want to call it so that someone will write-up and create a definitive guide.

I dont care if you copy someone elses or copy from a lot of places. I want a clear, concise organized instruction write-up, with a brief explanation of all the inputs, outputs and do-kickies of the AFC/VAFC variety.

Links to other install pages are great. Attachments of actual manuals are great (I'll even host them).

This needs to be complete and definitive.

I am offering one FREE OBD1/OBD0 chipping, shipped to your door to the person who wants to take on this task. If its REALLY good, I may even throw in a serial data cable if I think it's exceptional.

So this is the time for you VAFC guys who know a little about it and have been wanting to convert to the ECU dark side to get some free ----.

Let's go!

Re: FREE Chip Kit for VAFC Install Instructions - Definitive Guide

Contrary to what people say. VAFC2 is the only one that will work on our 7th gen cars running D17 engines and vtec. One day I was doing a head swap into my DX and putting a EX head so i would have vtec capabilities and needed the wiring diagram for our cars.. as i was doing the install i notcied that not all the wires were being connected and used considering APEXI doesnt have the proper diagram for our cars... Which in turn is why i created this full install...With that in mind, while installing the unit i noticed that the manual that came with the thing does not have our car model listed but it does have our engine D17 listed... its listed as EU3 or EU4 in the book which says to use diagram H8-a... this is wrong.. it will get u the right install but not all the wires connected.. yes i know there is another thread that says its missing the VTM wire... but it is also missing another wire.. the TDC wire.. when installing the VAFC2 u should follow diagram H7-b which shows u were to connect the VTM wire and TDC wire.. but DO NOT connect the VTC CAM SIGNAL wire cause we do not have that on our cars... that wire on the ECU is for the Secondary 02 Sensor and not the VTC.. just tape it off and put it to the side cause its the only wire that wont be used.... the diagram also shows where to connect the VTM wire..Basically u are using a combination of diagram H8-a and H7-b to complete the install.. After creating this install guide GEARBOX has also gone back and redid his wiring to connect the rest of the wires.. He also has gone and made a modified version of Diagram H8-a which shows the rest of the connections.... My car runs fine and so does gearbox and hope this helps with everyones install. ~xproductionz

*Here is the updated wire diagram. I don't know what benefit the TDC will give, but it's better to just have it hooked up. Thanks for the info. ~gearbox

The second piece of info you need to install this thing is the vafcII harness color code from the manual. This will show you how to match up the harness wires to the ecu wires. This diagram is ONLY for showing what each color means and whether the wire should be cut or spliced. The diagram above actually tells you where to wire them on the car.

Enjoy, ~gearbox.

Also you should know that the air/fuel ratio most likely cannot be adjusted because the ecu on 03-04 civics will adapt and counter any changes made with the vafcII over time. So I guess it's still useful to monitor engine functions like rpm, voltage, etc. This has yet to be proven with actual dyno results. ~gearbox

Also keep in mind that it hasnt been proven true yet that the ecus on 03-04 actually counter the changes.. but based on a 1 or 2 peoples experiences they say it does.. we will find out soon enough when somone puts the vafc into there car and get it dynoed and then gets it dynoed again like a year later or so. ~xproductionz

INITIAL SETUP PROCEDURE--Very Important!!

Just after the install is done, you need to set certain functions in order for the vafcII to work with your car. As far as I know, these will work for a D17 1.7L SOHC VTEC engine on 2001-2004 civic EX.

If you started the car without performing this setup, you will need to reset the ecu and start over.

After the install, turn the car to the ON position but do not crank the engine. The vafcII display should now be active.

1) Sensor number IN 06 OUT 06
2) Number of cylinders = 4
3) Throttle position = arrow pointing north-east
4) Vtec number = 3
5) hold down accelerator for 10 secs, then release for 10 secs

Turn off the car and remove the key to save settings. It is now safe to start the car for the first time. There should be no check engine light at all.

DO NOT ever adjust any vafcII settings when the engine is running!! All changes including vtec engagement and fuel tuning must be made when the car is on, but engine is off, as described above.

It is strongly recommended that a dyno be used to measure and adjust the air/fuel ratio for your vehicle. The ideal ratio is 14.7:1 which is best for combustion and emissions.

As a general rule, our cars tend to run lean in the lower rpms and rich in the upper rpms, although this is not always true.

Have fun, ~gearbox.

Rule of thumb everyone... If u can... SOLDER the wires together cause based on exerperience i have had it where the connectors they provide come loose.. and it has happened to me on my 98 civic and actually blew my ecu... if u cant do it during the install now then u might want to put that on ur TO-DO-LIST for the future.. ~xproductionz

Cram it all into one post...but I am definitely looking for a more well rounded explanation with more than one model or OBD generation.

Can you keep adding to what you have started? Great so far...

Re: FREE Chip Kit for VAFC Install Instructions - Definitive Guide

this a pretty overall way to do it!
Things needed:

-VAFC
-Solder
-Soldering gun
-Electrical tape
- 2 - 2amp diodes

Step 1
locate ecu.
Locate the top plug and remove it from the ecu.

Step 2
Find the green wire that is on the vafc. You want to solder the green wire into the blue wire with gray dots on it. When done use tape and plug the harness back in.

Step 3 a)
Locate the 2nd plug, should be in the middle. Find the purple and pink wires from the vafc, now locate the green with yellow strip on it. You want to cut this wire in half, (Cut far from the ecu to give yourself some room) Now get one diode and shorten the legs a bit where about 1 inch is left on it.

Step 3 b)
Take the diode with the gray end and solder that to the wire that you just cut that is going towards the car away from ecu. (DON'T LEAVE THE SOLDER ON DIODE TOO LONG BECAUSE IT WILL MELT THE DIODE) When done tape up the wire and diode.

Step 3 c)
Take the purple wire and solder this to the other end of the diode that has nothing on it. (Be sure again not to leave the soldering gun on it too long) Now tape up the diode and the purple wire.

Step 3 d)
Take the other diode with the gray mark pointing towards the ecu and solder that end to the wire that is coming from the ecu that you just cut. After that take the pink wire and solder that to the other end of the diode. When done tape up the diode and the wires making sure nothing is exposed.

Step 4
Now locate the blue wire on the vafc, and locate the blue wire with a black strip on it harness of the ecu. Cut this wire in half and solder the vafc blue wire to the ecu. Leave the other end unused. Use tape to tape up the wires. And when done plug the harness back in.

These last steps are gonna be difficult because the wires are kinda hard to get to.

Step 5
Locate the 3rd plug which is at the very bottom. Find the gray wire from the vafc, now locate the red wire with a black strip on the ecu harness. You want to solder the gray wire onto the red with black stirp. Use tape to tape up the work.

Step 6
Locate the yellow and white wires on the vafc, now locate the white with a green strip coming from ecu harness. Cut that wire in half leaving yourself some room to work with the wires. Now solder the yellow wire to the end that goes towards the ecu. The white wire goes towards the car. Solder both wires and use tape to cover up work.

Step 7 - This one is kinda tricky so BE CAREFUL!
There are going to be two wires on the harness a black with 2 gray dots and a solid black wire. You want to find the black solid wire. After that get the brown and black wires that are coming from the vafc, and solder these two wires onto the black wire coming from the ecu. Make sure that the brown wire is closer to the ecu than the black wire. I put my brown right in front of the black. Solder them onto the black solid wire. DO NOT TWIST THESE TWO TOGETHER!After that use tape and tape up your work.

Step 8
Locate the red and orange wires from the vafc. Now find the yellow with a black strip and gray dots on it. You want to solder the orange wire closer to the ecu than the red wire. DO NOT TWIST THESE TOGETHER!!! When done soldering cover up with tape.

And finally plug in the last harness to the ecu. Check all connections to make sure that everything is soldered on tightly and neatly. That should cover all the wires and everything that needs to be done. That is the best that i can tell everyone to do. YOU NEED TO SOLDER EVERYTHINGYOU CANNNOOOOTT CRIMP OR TAP. Because if you do a good signal will not go through

Installing the A'pexi Super-AFC

wires:

1. Connect the Black wire to the ground wire (black wire) under the passenger side seat.

2. Next connect the Brown wire 3-5 inches closer to the ECU, towards the front of the car, than the black wire. This is on the same ground wire as the black wire.

3. These should be the only wires running under the seat.

4. The gray wire should connect to the Red w/ Black Stripe wire. This is the Throttle Sensor wire. The Red w/ Black Stripe Wire is located on the ECU on the very bottom connector, the gray/black one.

5. Next the RPM sensor wire, this wire is located on the top connector of the ECU, the RPM sensor wire is the dark blue wire, the wires included with the RPM sensor are attached like this: WWW-WB-WWW. Where the W=other wire and the B=RPM meter wire. You will connect the green wire to this wire.

6. Next are the MAP sensor wires, you will have to cut this wire. This is the wire that the yellow and white wires from the S-AFC will connect to. The Green w/ Red Stripe wire (MAP SENSOR wire) is located on the ECU on the bottom connector. The white wire runs directly to the Map sensor, out from the ECU, and the Yellow wire will connect to the Map Sensor wire going to the ECU.

7. Visual = ECU------GwRS---YW---SAFC----WW---GwRS------Map Sensor.

8. Now to power the A'pexi S-AFC. Run the Orange wire from the S-AFC to the Yellow w/ Black Stripe wire on the BOTTOM of the gray connector. There are 2 Yellow w/ Black Stripe wires make sure you connect it to the bottom one. Now the Red wire from the S-AFC will connect to the Yellow w/ Black Stripe wire above the Orange wire. Power is all set.

This is what I have done to install my S-AFC, (Yes, it works fine). Special thanks to Boosted for some info. I have tried to make this as simple as possible, if you have any ?'s PM me and I will try my best. You cannot and will not hold me accountable for any mechanical problems encountered with this DIY, it is SOLEY up to you on installing this product. Mine is installed and is working fine, except the fact that I have yet to go to a DYNO, but I will as soon as I get some more cash flow. enjoy people!!!!

http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=418159 go here for wiring diagrams andhttp://www.apexi-usa.com/support_wiring.asp and here for more infohttp://www.apexi-usa.com/support_installation.asp

i used all this and a haynes manual for the wiring diagram of the gsr and did it right the first time.

I could really use a ecu chip.

Re: FREE Chip Kit for VAFC Install Instructions - Definitive Guide

I currently have the vafc2 and boy was i dissapointed with apexi's instgructions. Pretty much it's just a book that tells you how to get to each setting, but not what the settings are for and what they do. It's pretty much as if they expect you to know all this when you buy the unit. Honestly i can say now that after using the unit and experimenting with it i've figured most of the settings out, but there are still a few that i can't figure out. This being said, it was actually easier for me to comprehend uberdata and turboedit and the way they work. Xenocron...I'll be contacting you over the winter some time when my car's in the garage about having you chip my ecu...not that I don't know how to, just that I'm feelin' kinda lazy ;D That and the fact that my vafc2 will only reliably get me to 10psi. I'm only up to 8psi now and once and a while it pops the cel anyway. Take it from my experience...not only is it better and cheaper to chip the ecu, but it's also alot easier to learn to use. :6

That's all well and good, but it's still just install instructions. Unless you're a complete idiot, figuring out how to install it is the easy part. How about in the Etc. mode...under display scale...the bottom on is Cr: +-3%...and you can change it from 3 up to 30% i believe. What exactly does this feature do? obviously it's some type of correction, but for what? Or what about in the settings mode with the TH-Point? I understand what the wide throttle setting is for, but what about the narrow throttle? What is typicly the best setting for that as well? I've figured out most of the rest, but these 2 puzzle me the most. :S

the correction is for fuel, if you have your vtec kick in before stock. throttle point i'm not exactly sure, it has to do with the % of throttle to fuel change ratio.

Lol...you guys are a bit late on that one :P I did finally get them figured out, and how the percentages change with the settings vs. throttle crossover point. None the less, I've moved on to ecu tuning, so the afc pretty much sits as a $400 gauge :-X
