USB ECU
 

im sure you guys have covered this before. i tried searching but couldnt find anything, maybe im not using the right keywords?

anyway..

i have a random usb cable i want to put on a p28 but the color of the wires inside the cable are probably not the same as the nokia one. there are 4 wires total (as im sure you know) and on the usb plug its self there are 4 things on there so when you plug it in it goes to the wires (duh) now my question is on the plug starting from left to right where do they connect to on the ecu from left to right. maybe someone with one thats out of there car they can use a wire tester to see which one goes where. it would also make it alot easier to figure out for any usb cable id want to use in the future. and would be a great write up instead of the nokia one which only tells you which color to use.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

You do not use a USB cable. You use a USB-TTL or Serial-TTL converter, which is either integrated with a USB cable, is a box/board that plugs into a USB cable, or uses a serial cable and has nothing to do with USB unless you provide your own USB-serial converter into the mix.

Methinks you need to go back and research the basics. A look at the moates.net gear would give you an idea of what you need *or* how to explain it to us.

thanks im still new and researching this stuff, i didnt know the usb cable had to have that in/on it or whatever. im guessing thats why you have to use that nokia one right?

The Nokia cables were old school. DB9/serial cables that plugged into your laptop on one end, and the phone end you took apart and pinned into a connector for your ECU. FWIW, modern laptops do not have serial ports anymore, they are the nine pin connector that's shaped like a VGA cable's plug. No USB involved.

I haven't seen a Nokia cable in quite some time, I have a couple in a bag somewhere. Not for sale, get the faster/newer ---- for pennies. I'm a big fan of the Moates.net gear, it doesn't take a big fat dump on you every six months. On my T61, with a $35 HULOG Extreme, I get 45-70 samples/sec, that's pretty ripped compared to a lot of standalones out there.

nice, thanks for the info man.and being nice since i dont really know a hole lot of what im talking about. i wish there was a way to "tune on the fly" with no eprom burning but i dont think thats going to be easy to figure out if its even passable. maybe you might know?

LOL, yes. Get a Moates.net ostrich, it is a box that you plug a USB cable into one side and a ribbon cable that fits in place of the chip. You can reflash the program very quickly while driving, no hiccoughs.

I like the newer Ostrich v2.0's because they are super fast and you can download a .bin from them without putting the car into limp home mode (flashing the program is seamless with v1.0, but reading it isn't. Go figure). To me $175 for one is a good deal, but if you are bargain hunting you can find some deals on Moates.net gear in the FS forums here.

Also, Blueridge Motorsports bought another Ostrich v2.0, and might sell their v1.0... (828) 433-4545 during business hours, you'll tak to either Brandon or Mike. They are probably going to keep it as a back up, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

so something i dont totaly understand is do you use there program? or do you just run anything like crome or whatever and it just works normal?

Crome, eCtune, Uberdata, TurboEdit, supports the Moates.net gear.
