TurboEdit: difference between linear and step ign. retard?

Hallo,

i played a bit with the TE ign. retard.
linear retard is clear for me but whats the advantage or the step retard?

if i take the -0.25° in step mode i get far far more advance under full boost then with linear mode?!
ok more advance gives me more power but the difference is very huge... isn't this a bit too dangerous?

and whats the advantage of a step instead of a linear interpolation of the ign. map?

i thought that linear is even smoother and gets a smoother power band or am i wrong?

please let me know some technical details on that issue.

Thanks
Malte.
