turbo on dellorto dhla 40's
 

im starting to turbo my 2.0 8 valve vauxhall/opel/gm
20SEH engine, it has 10:1 compression std, which i will be taking down to around 8.5:1 , it is running on twin dellorto dhla carbs.. they fuel it fine at 165bhp (they used to be on my friends ford fiesta rallycross car and still have the jets etc from when it was on that car (2000cc zetec, rally cams, built bottom end, extensive head work)

all i plan on doing for the turbo setup is building a airtight box for the carbs to go in and using a 1:1 fpr

any comments??

no, lets not try fuel injection ,why swap £600 worth of carbs for a restrictive afm, a single throttle body manifold and a cheap hack to trick the ecu into injecting around about the right amount of fuel?

Well, if you said that to people to actually chip their ecu's they would slap you. The thing about computers is the amount of accuracy they have. Plus datalogging capabilities. Tuning an engine with electronics is sooooooooo much easier than changing a jet. I really doubt that a carb engine can compare to MPFI. But for your application carb is fine, unless you want to do heavy racing, and infinite tuning.

How are you making this box, why not just run two seperate pipes to each carb off the turbo. (like a Y pipe) instead of building a box. (like a ram air setup right?)Just get a flange welded to casing of each carb. Unless you can bolt a pipe to them.

How was the filter connected to your buddies rally car?

the dellortos (near enough identical to dcoe weber carbs) need to be in an airtight box for turbo applications due to the various air bleeds etc, apart from that the engine should run fine, will [probably need bigger chokes, a bigger main jet and a smaller air corrector...


i appreciate the more accuracy of the ecu, but if its being fooled into running forced induction then im sure its nowhere near as accurate as it should be..

also theres the fact that two twin choke carbs (i.e individual choke for each cylnder) will flow much more air than a single throttle body manifold..


eventually i want to upgrade to 48mm tapered throttle bodies with 8 injectors and a proper ecu.. but thats gonna be about £2k

wont you also have to have your carbs modified, o ringed to accept boost? other wise the air will bleed out the carbs and mess things up.

as long as you got them in a box you shouldn't have any troubles. gotta pressurize the whole carb and it should work correctly. good luck! sounds cool.
