Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

I said that assuming that you do not have a built engine as %90 of us here don't, especially if you're using the AFC hack. These little honda engines were not designed for boost and don't have the cooling to deal with the extra heat for very long. Purpose built turbo engines have larger oil galleys and better coolant flow to deal with the extra heat. 15 seconds is a long time to be at full throttle anyways.

Anyone else have those really f*d up idles where the meter bounces around? Well hey this is most likely your culprit.

Its true that proper tuning can prevent this, and any ECU thats designed to know that when you hit vacuum in the engine after going into boost, can ignore the old MAP reading.

Anyways, this is just an idea of what may be causing those erratic idles and another reason why the AFC hack isn't the best way to go necessarily.

I would like to know this also I am ghettodyned but i have that also. I know this is a HACK section but i still read it

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

Shadowrex, I believe the only way to fix it is to either make the MAP signal dropped (and you probably can't do this with GD) after vacuum is detected again or to run really rich/lean at the idle RPM.

do most of you have your low and high throtle set the same on you afc or do you mix it up(if you know what i mean)

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

I am currently running 5-8 psi daily (5 in small gears, 8 in bigger). I've set the AFC in lo to -40% all the way across and -38% at hi all the way across.
My TH-Point is at 11-12%, I have stopped pinging under low acceleration after I lowered the TH-POINT

so many opinions...
so confused.
someone correct me....

parts needed:
450cc ingectors
resistor box
s-afc
*normal safc wiring?
*new fuel pump?
*fpr?

---------------------
this is good for 10 psi, yes?
can someone list ALL settings on the afc for use in this?

sorry about the point form but I want it plain and simple, no "well you could... OR you could..."

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

Uhm, speed density knows instantly that conditions in the intake manifold have changed, and modify the fuel accordingly in a timely fashion. It is MAF systems that go rich for a second when the throttle closes and the BOV goes off, IF the BOV is vented to atmosphere instead of before-turbo-after-MAF meter.

You would be running the same setup I have and it works great. You will not need a missing link. The missing link is basicaly a one way valve that mounts inbetween the map sensor and the throttle body. It prevents the map sensor from seeing boost and setting off the cel(check engine light). Lets say the map sensor normaly reads voltage from .50 volts-5.0 volts on a naturally aspirated engine. .50 volts being at idle and 5.0 volts being wide open throttle. When you add boost to the intake, the map sensor will be getting lets say 1.0 volts per pound of boost. The ecu sees the voltage as being too high and sends a cel. With the AFC hack you are taking the signal from the map sensor and lowering the voltage to compensate for the large injectors which in turn tricks the ecu into thinking it is supplying the stock injectors with the proper ammount of fuel. Therefore your ecu will not sence boost because the voltage has been "hacked" to fool the ecu into thinking everything is ok.

Can this be done by putting a compasitor or resistor between the map sensor and the ecu..

Don't post crap to this thread. That is far from correct.

Bro, I apologise. It was late at night, and I misread what you were saying.... I remember at the time thinking you stated it could be done that way, not that you were asking a question. I'm feeling pretty stupid about it right now, you did not merit the reaction you got from me.

To give general reasons why it wouldn't work, a fixed rate resistor put in series with a varying value potentiometer (the MAP sensor) will skew the signal instead of manipulating it in a linear manner. Depending on the MAP resistance, a proportionally larger or smaller than needed amount of load would be dropped across the fixed value resistor.

A capacitor is going to charge up and then maintain a steady level of voltage flow, in a DC situation. You want the ECU to be able to see the MAP voltage as it changes, not having it's response thrown off.

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

i jus wanted to add cuz i dont know if this was stated or not. and i remember someone askin. you dont wanna use a missing link cuz it wont let the afc do it's "hackin." and no fmu or fpr is needed. also, if anyone wants to boost higher then 11-12 psi. a 2bar or 3bar map sensor will let you do that. the honda oem map sensor usually maxes out at 12psi on most cars. sorry if i've repeated any info which has already been said.

I have a quick question to ask too. Most of the guys on the board are running DSM 450cc injectors, but is it possible to use any other 450cc's such as RC? And will I be able to use the same settings as the other guys using Dsms.

Dr.Boost 10-19-2003 12:48 PM

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

Yep, no problem. The only thing is you won't have to use a resistor box.

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

And I'm going to have to disagree.
The honda ECUs do linear interpolation.
They have either a 15x17 or 20x10 VE table, which even you admit is overkill for most situations. With linear interpolation...

This site isn't about building a 9 second turbo car with the budget of a race team.
This site is about cheap, DIY solutions that work.

Unfortunately, I have to say the MAP-hacks work 10x better than a FMU, and when combined with a chipped ECU can be truly fearsome. It works, and works well.

That's all I have to say about that, I guess.

on the MAP hack working better then a FMU is absolutely agree. Big budget over here are nut house racing What budget were scrapping change to buy a new turbo

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

I have read this whole post and have learned some new stuff which explains some good points. I am running this setup on my built/turboed D16A1 (brown top)I run my afc at these settings
lo
1000= -30%
2-8k= -40%
Hi
1k-8k= -40%

Idles @750rpm w/22in vaccum
I have a slight advantage with vaccum/mecanical advance as far as the AFC goes.

Now my question is this since my honda map sensor will only read 9.2psi, is there a way for me to use this hack with a different map sensor without having to go to an independant FMS?? Thanks for all the helpfull info Joseph.

Why don't you just shut the ---- up already. Nobody wants to hear you brag about how ------- smart you are. Take that attitude somewhere else. We don't need it here. As for Joseph eating us alive, I don't think that would happen because unlike you, Joseph has a clue and doesn't have his head stuffed up his ass. He realizes we don't have millionaire budgets and we like to build our cars without spending $10,000 and without rediculous nonsense theory and astronomical physics combined with propulsion. Get a ------- clue already. You really need to stop the stereotyping/name calling bullshit. You're pissing EVERYBODY off when you do that. I suggest you settle down in your posts or just don't post at all if that's the attitude you are going to have.

Sean is a good dude who's forgotten what it's like to start off learning and asking the "stupid" questions. By this point in this thread that has stretched a couple months, some of the posters of such questions have either revealed themselves as total morons or have gotten past their n00b state and started to grasp the concepts very well. Makes me proud.

Sean's car is also a zero-bling junkyard turbo setup; I don't think he was advocating spending a million dollars on a setup so much as he was recommending a good total engine management solution for some of the people who can't catch onto the theory required to properly do the DIY stuff. Face facts, some people are better off buying a fluent product like Hondata and taking it to an experienced Hondata tuner and enjoying a nice reliable setup instead of blowing engines trying to learn.

Oh, and Sean? I have a new transmission, ACT 4 puck, tubular SS mani, and Holset HX35... you're going to have to step up the pace on that Accord if you want to hang with me. ;)

ok ive been reading this and have a fewquestions of my own the afc hack advances ur timing under boost so if u use a btm will it couner act that, this sounds stupid but what does the hack do to advance ur timing like what signal or voltage is sent where to do this u know what im sayin? :-[

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

I was getting some hesitation above 4500 RPM which I think is caused by my spark plugs.

Anyway, I was sick of getting the code 13 (barometric press) on my OBD2 set-up D16y8 VAFC DSM 450cc/resistor box. I decided to go ahead and try a conversion to P28 OBD1. The difference is amazing! It pulls harder. However my stock idle is acting up. I tried both enriching it all the way to -20% to leaning it to -42% at both Hi-Lo Wide and Narrow at 1000-4000 RPM but I still could not get it right. Any suggestions?

It wasnt doing it before with the OBD2 ECU. I did the conversion in a matter of minutes. I had to drive to my friend's house to pick up the ECU and did the conversion before I left his house. The car was idling fine with the OBD2 ECU. I may have to plug the OBD2 again to continue troubleshooting. I have another OBD1 ECU as well, I will try that too......

Fixed! I changed the setting to -25% on the low cam at the 1000 RPM range. I also changed my toasted spark plugs. Idles normal again.....

BTW: OBD1 P28 makes such a whole lot of a difference on this mod. My cars pulls harder than ever!

if so your running to rich at idle causing it to bog, same thing happen to me.

Yep. That should be the ECU trying to correct itself. No probelm now, except sometimes it takes 2-3 tries for me to start the car like the OBD2. I dont mind it tho.....

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

Spent the whole week reading through all the topics and I have a clear view at the possible boost options. I prefer the AFC-hack. I'm ordering my turbo stuff tomorrow, will or will not my setup work well?

B16, stock compression
T3/T4 super 60
tial wastegate @ 8 psi
KN filter
680x117x74mm Forge intercooler
BOV
2 degree colder plugs
retarded timing (~4 degrees)
Walbro 255 pump
FPR
370 or 450cc peak hold injectors
resistor box (stock)
V-AFC
New preheated lambda's
all the nesseary gauges

Is a BTM nessesary?

thermal 11-20-2003 01:33 PM

Re:The truth about the afc hack!!!!!!!

The BTM is not necessary but it will surely help you out for ease of timing adjustablilty once you start tuning your set-up.... the list looks good. Where are you buying your turbo?

Why ..can you supply me cheaper? ;) It's a t3/t4 with .57 compressor wheel and .50 compressor .63 turbine , should boost at ~3500rpm

I'm also still looking for injectors, RC doesn't sell 450 peak/hold :(
