Timing retard?
 

Ok, I think I'm just gonna do the hack, for now, because its my first turbo project. Once I get it working I will chip a P06 and use a conversion harness but for now, how much timing should I back out at the distributor for running 6-8 psi?

Setup:
96 CX D16y7 (Y8 intake mani)
89 Saab 900 turbo
Saab 9000 FMIC
HF manifold
DSM 450's (If Arpa sent them yet?)
S-AFCII

i would say only about 1-2 degrees of retard. all cars are different though...

I would research the S-AFCII's ability to read knock.

If it has knock board style technology, get yourself a knock sensor, and stick it on your block (Yes, your D16Y7 has a place for you to put a knock sensor). Then retard based on the S-AFC's readout to tell you how much.

Here is the thing. It throws up a number (I don't have the safc, but I've asked some questions of others who do) that increases with knock. But since the knock value increases with rpm (logically), it doesn't seem that useful to me. I'm guessing the knock board in the ecu can tell what the voltage should be at a particular rpm, and pull timing accordingly, where the safc just seems to throw up a number that corresponds to the voltage, irrespective of rpm. If the info I got is correct, that makes it much less handy for tuning than I originally thought when I was looking into it. You've go to figure out what the number should be at a each rpm, and watch it carefully to see if it is correct or not. It seems like it would only be useful for catching a spike somewhere or something like that, and even then you'd have to be staring at it. Can anyone confirm?

Chipping an OBD1 and getting a harness is looking better everyday! LOL I may just run low boost and back it down a few degrees.

When you chip an ECU and then get the base map set to run the car and bring it to the Dyno, do you have to remove the chip and reburn it to tune it? Can you reburn the same chip over and over? Do I need to bring the prom burner and my laptop and continually remove and burn?

Depends on your software. Uberdata is still working on serial communication support, but it's coming. So, yes, right now you would have to reburn.
