Wrong. The marks on the timing cover are specific to the crank pulley that rested against that cover from the factory.

There's a 2 degree timing difference between A6 and Z6 cover/pulley combos, and that's the CLOSEST any combo I know of comes to being in alignment.

A mismatched cover/pulley puts the TDC mark out? Didnt know that. Thanks.
Stethoscope FTW, to ensure a non-grenaded motor.

Yeah with 450's... How I set the timing on this one was ,start with stock p2p maps then add 8 degrees acrossed the entire base and then synced the distributor to the mark on the crank at 12degrees in crome. After that while tuning I actually advanced the timing even more almost everwhere. my timing maps have some wierd looking numbers like 11 degrees final timing at 11psi. but hey it runs great and the plugs look good. I took like two weeks datalogging and making changes to and from work so it's really smooth running.

Dude to tell you the truth synching timing doesn't even matter. Half the junk I get the pleasure of tunning has a shiny ebay crank pulley on it with no marks anyway. I just go by feel being carefull turning the boost up in steps and really checking plugs. I hate tuning these crap mobiles. I'm getting to the point where I don't answer phone calls for tunes anymore.

I wish I could get sweet cars like you all do. LOL I'm lucky if I get the guy to spring for the a couple $8 dollar sets of spark plugs. Anymore I focus on my own cars and thinking of ways to get Dave to let me hang around him more.

I cant remember the last time I worked on a car that had an aftermarket pulley. Luck I guess.
Syncing timing is a habit for me. Plus, you're able to tell them that the next time they have the dizzy off or do engine work, to set timing to 16* and everything will be ok.

Telling them that doesn't mean anything of the sort. A lot of these kids don't know how to use a timing light... but you know this if you know why I hate the timing advance lights. :l

Man I agree with everything you just said. For me it's been that stupid ebay pulley 90% of the time. The last car I tuned I showed up the car had no timing marks to use and the guy had no new plugs I had a moment there were I could feel it I lost the love. I like to do a really good and thorough job on a tune and it's just not fun when you don't have a few simple things you need to get it done.

Okay, why do you hate advance lights?

is that the proper way to fix the fuckered up timing with the p2p timing map? i had a bitch of a time trying to figure out the timing a few years back. got it ok but always knew it could have been better.
