tach jumping? with msd?

the tac started bouncing all over the place on the way home. which was weird.

so i pulled over and wipped out my spare ignitor... he he... except it didn't help.
then i was thinking to myself, maybe i should have grounded the msd to the battery not the frame.

so i destroyed my wiring for the boost gauge light, just so i could tripple up on tripple or quadruple up on the gauge of the wire i had to use. that didn't fix the problem

i took off the distributer cap and filed down the rotor a bit, and the contact points in the distributer, nothing still jumpping like a fat kid on christmas.

damn. it didn't do it today on the way to crappy.
i guess only on long drives.
which scares me

i was looking for a new distributer kit and wires, but crappy is out of them. DAMN IT.

do you guys think that could be it? distributer cap and wires?
the msd was giving off a little squeel, instead of it regular clicking. amd only squeels when the tack is jumpping.... wired ----

help me out.
what do you think the trouble is?

you should take off the dizzy and check the bearing on the dizzy itself mine went bad and started jumping around then melted the rotor on the end of the rod from the bearing :) sucks to be on a freeway and that happen specially in the fast lane with no shoulder :)

C_piddy what year and car did you install that MSD on? I have the same problem with my Integra after I converted to OBD1. I beleive the internal coil inside the distributor is fucked. Possibly recheck your coil wiring and tach signal wire/s.

Re:tach jumping? with msd?

this car is pre obd0 it's a dohc 89zc converted to 87 electronics. so i custom mounted an 87 dizzy on the 89zc for vacume advance, and so i didn't have to convert to obd0 on my 87 crx si.

and my tach is plugged into the msd unit. i will check the wiring.

the funny thing is that it worked very well for 100km then it started to bounce and with the tach jumping there was slight hesitation. i was on the high way and was desperatly avoiding boost.

i am going to change the dizzy today, because i don't remember when it was changed last.

the wires i am going to buy today, preformance ones from accel. hopefully that will solve the problem.

i will also lookin the dizzy, and make sure the bearing is ok. i think it might be the problem too because there is a rusty residue all over anything...

thanks for the replys

wish me luck

Re:tach jumping? with msd?

mine was doing that and it was one of the wires lightly rubbing the rotor!

Re:tach jumping? with msd?

8. How do I fix:
• A high rpm miss when the engine is under load?
• An rpm limiter that seems to activate at the wrong rpm?
• Erratic operation of electronic devices/ECUs?
• A tachometer needle that seems to “bounce”?
All of the above can be caused by Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) generated by the ignition system. Specifically
through the coil and spark plug wires. The ignition system is a miniature power station and the spark plug wires
are its transmission lines. The wires (in particular, “solid core” wires) can broadcast EMI that seeps into electronics
and causes erratic behavior.
To combat EMI you need to run a set of helically wound spark plug wires such as MSD’s Heli-Core or 8.5mm Super
Conductor Wires. Having the conductor wound around a special center core produces a “choke” that holds EMI
inside the wire. Solid core wires on the other hand, have no suppression capabilities and should not be used with an
MSD Ignition. MSD’s Super Conductor Wires have extremely low resistance (less than 50 ohms per foot), yet are
designed to suppress EMI like a high resistance wire.

switched wires, and nothing....

still miss firing, and the msd is makeing funny noises.

Re:tach jumping? with msd?

are you running the stock heat range on your spark plugs?

Re:tach jumping? with msd?

yes? should i run i am... why do people go a step colder????

would that make a difference?

sould i get ngk v-power part # ZFR6J-11 ?

that's the next step i guess? but can some one explan what the plugs will change??? and why it ran for 100km just fine. and why the tach doesnt' jump when i atach it to the neg of the coil instead of the msd tach out put?

help me out guys.

you all rock...

chris
