Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?---PROBLEM SOLVED---

Ok, tried to get it dyno tuned, but the guy there was a real prick and didn't like my HMT, said it was unsafe the way I had it set up. I ran two baseline tests and my a/f was in the 9:1 to 10:1 ratio all the way across the board. My afc settings are lo -50% at idle and slowly increasing to -40% at full throttle and my hi settings are -40% all the way across. I have a d16z6, a-afc, dsm 450, stock fuel pump, brand new O2 sensor, no check valves, 8-10 psi. What are my options, Should I sell the afc and get a uberdata, or maybe getting an adjustable fuel regulator? Maybe going back to stock injectors, or maybe like 330cc ones. Is everyone else that has this set up with afc hack running way to rich too and they just don't know it?

Whoa whoa whoa whoa...

Your setting a re EXTREMELY dangerous. I don't care what your AFR from the hick dyno guy said.

Your flow rate is physically LESS than stock pulse durations at the same MAP value. You have issues, and they're going to cause you to blow your ring lands away.

Read the Engine Management FAQ, section 2, question 4.

I looked at the read outs from the wideband and it said I was rich, I can even smell my gas out of my muffler like crazy! I went to a import dyno place that do this for a living, and the wideband can't be THAAT far off.

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

I'm wondering if my s-acf isn't working right. I checked all the wiring and it's all done right, the connections are great, (sodered) and everything seems to work fine, it's like it dosn't tell my egine to give less gas as I lean it out almost. Not sure. I'm gonna try to get the afr print outs from the dyno on monday and get the exact #'s on it so I can post that, it might be helpful to you guys in helping my find out my freakin' problem!

Check your freekin wiring on the vafc before you have a stroke.lol go to the apexi website. they have a wiring update. connect the blue vtm signal wire on the apexi. do it now! go get a flashlight.j/k. ;D they do have an update though, with a much clearer wiring diagram.

you did wire into the MAP sensor right???

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

I have the S-AFC, and I recheck all the wires last night and everything is good. As for the MAP sensor, there is nothing in the instructions that talk about that?!?! I'm actually thinking something is wrong with my 450 injectors or wiring, I think my car is staying in Open loop giving it too much gas 24/7.

do u have resistors wired in there?

are you sure you're set to 06 in, 06 out for the sensor?

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

yes, I have resistors, map is wired right and my sensors are set at 06 and 06, that's why i'm so confused :-\

wtf? your "sensor" wires from the AFC are wired by the ECU connecting to the MAP sensor wires..... thats how it adjusts the fuel... of course you'll be running 450cc injectors if those are not connected correctly stock is 240cc.. i had the same problem with my DSM 390cc injectors. rich as hell

I figgured out the map crap, yes I know I should be running rich because they are bigger, but everyone else on HMT seems to be able to lean it out enough with this set up

Just take the car to a performance shop that specializes in turbos in your area. save yourself alot of stress.

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

i did...I trailer it 1 1/2 hrs away to the nearest import tuner, he put it on the dyno, ran it once and said, NO way am I touching this, it isn't safe, charged me $160, and set me on my way. >:( he was a real prick! Then he gave me a lecture on how afc hack sucks and i'm an idiot for setting my HMT up like that and told me to get a hondata and then come back...
I'm send in my injectors out to be tested and cleaned, one of them might be stuck open someone told me.

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

When you go to dynos here you sign a waiver saying that you can't hold them responsible for any damage done to your car while on or after the dyno due to any modifications they perform. I would have been really pissed too if a guy said he wouldn't work with my car after I drove it all the way down to him, and then had him lecture me on my setup, and then charge me 150 bux. People go to dynos with fmu's and a wideband for crying out loud and get better treatment then you got. Go to a different dyno where they are nice and willing to say helpful things.

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

that's the thing, All the dynos that are close don't work on imports :'( only muscle cars. I live in Michigan, and Michigan sucks for imports

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

Anyways, 40 % across the board will have you very lean while in boost. You probably have an unrelated issue to the vafc settings if you are rich across the board. Yea check into the injectors, I also don't know what the deal with your car is, wether you had to do resistors or not for low impedance, so I can't help there.

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?

yea my car got the same shity problem im lean at idle running 44% i got 450's with the s-afc now heres what it is doing idle is lean just some regular puting around town i run perfect and when i boost i go rich witch is good but im also only running the afc at low throttle it is 42% across the board. ((any higher numbers than this makes my car cut out. but the gauge is rich as hell)) till readline and high side is pushing low 30's but the throttle point is set at 89-90 i was thinking could i just put my stock injectors back in and run the afc into the positive side instead of the negative with the big ones also im running only 8 psi and i got a FPR set at 45psi 1990 integra obd0 1 wire narrowband (stock)o2 sensor auto meter a/f gauge also my spark plugs dont look bad they have a grey color to them on the tops. ? looked just like my stock plugs before i changed over witht the better plugs when i started my turbo project do you think this is a confuzing post ???

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?---PROBLEM SOLVED---

OK I finially got the poblem worked out. It ended up being an Injector that was stuck open. The first set were a set of Blue tops out of an 89 gallant, just too old, so I got some black tops out of a 95 talon and just tuned it today an its great. 14.7 cruising and like 11.2-12.0 afr in full out boost. FINALLY I can drive with confidence.

what are the settings on your vafc now?

pa2play 06-28-2004 04:24 PM

Re:Running WAY rich with afc, what are my options?---PROBLEM SOLVED---

Its a SAFC and the settings are...
LO & HIare the same
1000-38%
2000-38%
3000-39%
4000-41%
5000-41%
6000-42%
7000-41%
8000-40%
My friend has a WB O2 and we did like 6 runs on a country road before we got it to this point. I could lean it out a bit more, but I'de rather stay on the safe side. Some may say that it looks really lean, but remember that all cars are a little different, and different altitude, and crap like that.
