Running lean and CEL with VAFC

Running lean and CEL with VAFC
Let me start out by saying I am a builder fabricator, not a tuneing guy. I just finished the install on a customers 98 Prelude 2.2 Vtec and my part went off perfectly. I stuffed a Turbonetics T3/T4 with a 2 1/2" downpipe in there with a 7" intercooler with 2 1/2" piping. A Magnaflow 2 1/2" in and 3" out high flow cat with a 3" cat back system with a magnaflow twin outlet muffler. Thre will be pics of this setup on the general topic/turbo build up section soon. The problem is with the fuel management. He is running 450 DSM injectors with a resistor box(of corse) and a 255 Walboro pump with a VAFC hack to controll everything. When he took it to the dyno to get it tuned the guy said it was running lean above 4000 RPM and he could not get it to change with the VAFC. The car also has a CEL with a P1491 code. I am thinking(and I dont know what I am talking about here) the computer is in safe mode with fixed fuel and timing because of the CEL. Has any one had a similar problem like this? Could I be correct about the CEL or could it be a defective VAFC. I know the VAFC is working below 4000RPM I played with the idle mixture before he picked the car up and I could get it to change idle. The air fuel guage reads rich almost all the time. But I know that doesn't mean anything. My part of this build is over but I would like to help this kid out. He has had some bad luck on this build already. He got screwed on a bunch of SS auto chrome parts off Ebay and then a local shop took his money for the install and never did anything(long story). He finally got all the correct parts and a good install but now he is having this problem. Any help would be apreciated.

Re: Running lean and CEL with VAFC
Are you sure the rest of the settings are correct on the AFC? It's all wired up properly? Injectors are working? Plugs are all the same color? Did you retard the base timing?

Re: Running lean and CEL with VAFC
Does anyone know what the P1491 code is? Or If I am right about the CEL causing his problem? I would like to help this kid out but like I said, I am no tuner. I would like to get a wide band and start tunning but I havent gotten in to it yet.

Re: Running lean and CEL with VAFC
that's the egr valve. i have a buddy with an 01 prelude sh with the h22 and he was having the same problems with his afc. tell him to sell the afc and get an obd2a to obd1 conversion harness and a chipped p28. i tuned my buddy's last weekend and immediately got rid of all cel's when we plugged in the chipped p28 and it runs one million times smoother. pm me if he wants a harness and ecu, i'll hook you up anthony, i also have the tuned map from my buddy's car, since we were using 450's also

Re: Running lean and CEL with VAFC
hey if he is looking to get started with uberdata i can help him out. I am in the Richmond area and have everything needed for tuning, a laptop, wideband, ostrich programmer, chip burner, etc. I tuned my buddy's jdm h22 accord the other week using uberdata. My friend Ben with the ef hatch and turbo z6 said he told you about me the other week and you may be interested in getting some tuning done.

Re: Running lean and CEL with VAFC
Hey, it's my car (thank you Anthony for getting this started) and I'm at a loss. I don't want to screw up the car obviously and if anyone is pretty sure they have a good fix for this, pm me. I'd like to talk to someone because noone else on other websites can seem to help me. Thanks again Anthony, you did a great job with your part and thanks everyone on the site for your suggestions.
Oh and this isn't my username someone let me use this because I couldn't register.
