Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

I just installed my "Hondalog" Datalogging cable last night:
http://www.moates.net/hondalog-p-79.html
and cannot get it to log, or react using Uberdata (datalogging section).
I have set to COM2 on both Device Manager, and Uberdata. (left everything else default). My laptop sees the USB device, and connects successfully to it.
I have read somewhere about cutting J12 jumper on ecu for Hulog... but unsure if this is also true for HondaLog?

Someone Please help, as it is getting annoying.

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

I'd say it looks just like this http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/...erialConverter
only pre wired to plug into cn2. Did you get your comp to recognize it by itself? Test it out through hyperterminal by itself before you hook up the ecu.

this is why j12 needs snipped? http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/...lexDatalogging

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

I used the supplied CD from Moates to install the drivers. It then recognized the serial converter. It seems to communicate with the ecu, as it displays results in some ghetto freeware "honda gauge?? or something" program (displays a/f boost, rpm, water temp, mph, etc on your laptop)... but the readings are totally garbled, and incorrect.

Another thing, thats weird.. Is with it plugged in, and the car running. If I set port (in datalogging section of uberdata) to correct COM, (and only if I check "log rpm's",) my DIY Vtec light starts flashing intermitally. (a light I wired to vtec silenoid to display when vtec is engaged). The second I uncheck "log rpm's", the light quits blinking.
So it must be connecting.

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

You need to wire in a jumper for J12 to datalog with Unerdata. I bet the numbers that you are getting are garbage, i.e. jumping around toggleing between good info and complete garbage. I don't know why everyone says to cut J12 to log with UD. I have tried this on 3 ECUs and several different datalogging cables and the only way I got good readings was by installing a jumper on J12. Also make sure that the baud rate oin device manager for your Hondalog (usb to serial bridge) is set to 38400.

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

those links you gave me talk about "hyperterminal". Any idea what that is, and where I could find it.
also, have a hard time finding "baude rate". Ive opened Device manager, and checked port settings, and also advanced tab, but cant seem to find baude rate setting. (my ecu is not plugged in currently, but I checked other com devices)

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

PS. I will also check on j12

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

The baud rate is int the Port Settings tab. It is actually labeled Bits per Second.

Hyperterminal is in Acessories>Communications.

If you got it from Moates then it is more than likely wired correctly and functioning properly.

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

ok, then i was looking at the right hypertermenal:
start\run\hypertrm
But I really couldn't figure out how to use it. I think your right tho. Im sure its plugged correctly. I will check baud settings, and j12 jumper.

Could it be that I am trying to use uber on a ecu that is chipped with a chrome chip? Also, Does chrome (non pro) allow datalogging?

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

If you are trying to datalog in Uber with a CROME chip then it will not work either. The free version of cROME does not datalog. If you prefer CROME then use another program such as Freelog to do your datalogging. When you create a ROM in CROME you have to add the datalogging code to the ROM.

While you are in CROME goto: Plugins>Enhancements>Quick Datalogger+RTP

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

If you decide to use CROME and Freelog then you need to either leave out J12 or have a way to disconnect it. I have J12 on my ECU set up on a switch for this reason. That way I can datalog with whatever program I choose to use.

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

WOW :o
You are full of great info... ;D
Thanks alot man, Its helped a ton. I found the baude rate setting as soon as I plugged in my ecu. I also cut j12, and it started sending me info (yay).
I think the reason im getting info on uberdata with j12 snipped is cause the chip is chrome... and besides, uberdata seems to misinterprite a few settings (ie mph, tps) and it doesn't display map, or iat.

O yea, and ECUcontrol works great, and reads everything w/o issues. I will thy the other program you suggested. I need to invest in a chip burner tho. Thanks again for all your help

how did you do a switch for j12¿?

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

I took some .100 spacing pin header and broke off a section of 3 pins. Then I pulled the pin in th middle out as it is not neded. I took the connectors from an old PC case and modified them to work with the pin headers I soldered onto my ECU. I did this with both J1 and J12. You need a connector with a least 3 cavities. It can have more but you only need 3. You can easily cut the extra cavities off with a pair of side cutters and clean up th cut with a razor knife. If the wires are not the correct places< the cavitie on each end of the connector, They can easily be moced to the correct position. All you need is a pick or some other small pointed object to release the pins from the connector body. Then I simply drilled a hole in the side of the case, with the board completely removed, for a mini toggle swatch. I soldered the leads from my connectors to the switches.

Kinda hard to see from this pic but you get the idea. If you are really interesed thenI can try to get some better pics.

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

nice write up..
What is the big board with the orange/white (presumed to be for j1 switch) wires running under it?

JonDouglas 07-20-2006 05:37 PM

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

Thanks. I wish I was the first one to think of switching the jumpers but I first saw it done on pgmfi.org

That board is the knock board. tThe wires don't actually run to it. The wires are run to my J1 switch.

StinkyFeet 07-20-2006 05:42 PM

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

yea, I noticed that was for j1 switch right after I posted. I wonder if you could find DIP switches, that you could wire all your jumpers to. Just a thought.
Also, speeking of ecu mods. Im trying to come up with a way to put a little door for the ecu chip. So you dont have to take the whole cover off, everytime you need to switch chips. Put some hinges on it, and a little latch. I think it would be cool.

Re: Purchased HondaLog - Will not Log???

Haha. Yeah that is a pretty good idea. The way you see my ECU in that picture is the way it has been sitting in the car for the past 2 months. ;D
