Problems starting with 450s, *NEW* overheating...

Well, i just went turbo, and it seemed to have gotten worse.

Before i went turbo, i had 450cc's and the vafc2 installed, tuned decently, on my d16z6. Once or twice in about a month, i would crank away for a while with no start, then after pausing for a sec, then turnin the key, it would fire up.

Well, tonight, now that im boosted, it did this, but it was a lot more work to get it started, but it eventually did, alot of cranking, and acting like it wants to start. THen i went to the gas station right after taht, and it would not start for the love of god, until i finally, let it prime, cranked it, and just barely tapped teh gas, and it fired right up.

According to my a/f gauge, im running reallllllllly rich right now, 9 psi on an ihi rbh5, really small turbo. So i figured the stock feul pump should be fine. COuld my cylinders be flooding with teh prime from the 450's? I dunno, its wierd. I want this thing to be more reliable. Any help is appreciated.

What are the idle settings on the AFC?

If the idel settings are the low rpms in the narrow throttle part, then i have them set at -34% from 1000-2000, if i go any lower, the car starts to die.

That's pretty rich. What do you mean by lower? I usually have mine set at like -40% at the lowest setting.

By lower, i mean decreasing the feul to like -38% and such, but when i do that, it just seems to want to die, i set is at 35%, maybe ill try a little lower though, right now im trying to solve teh overheating problem, replaced the thermostat and radiator cap, but it still overheats after like 15 minutes of driving, with very little boost.

Are you losing fluid? Smoke?

Bleed the coolant system? Hot wire your fan to run constant? Hot/cold spots in radiator?

I love you boost, lol. Anyways, i just bought another radiator, so thats a new rad, thermo, and cap, and it still will overheat when i boost hardcore, but it seems like its under alot of pressure. The upper hose expands like a mofo, maybe its old, but it was trying to leak a little out of teh upper rad hose, but i turned it and it stopped hissing. I went up and down the street, not going above 5 psi, then after about 4 minutes, i hit it hard in 1st and second, and sure enough, temp shot alomst to red, but stopped, i then turned the motor off a coasted, and when it came down a little, i turned it back on, and it went up tehn back down to normal, all teh way back home, the whole 2 miles or soo, lol.


When i pulled back up into the garage, i let it idle for about 10 minutes, and it would heat up, fan would come on, and it would cool down, and it did this constatly, but at the same time, there was constant smoke coming from the rad area, and a little bit from teh thermo area. I couldnt really tell exactly where it was coming from, but im pretty sure it was the lower rad hose, it was pretty moist. All i can think of is that there is an excessive amount of pressure being put into the cooling system, but what would do this. Ill probably wire the fan to be on constantly, but i shouldnt have to. My compression, on a quick check, with out oiling the cylinders, and just pulling the ecu fuse, was 190 210 180 190 off teh top of my head though, they were around there, and im sure if i oiled the cylinders, it would eb a little closer, so im kinda ruling out the headgasket, theres not much smoke coming out the exhaust, besides teh crazy richness right now, a/f gauge is never off of fully rich unless the engine is warming up.

this sounds stupid, but is there water in oil/oil in water? You should do a radiator flush, and replace your hoses... The wiring of the fans to the ignition is good, also, replacing with a more CFM fan is good too... are you running the half radiator?

Yeah, when i totally drained the coolant, there wasnt any oil in it, and i cant really tell if theres any coolant in teh oil, until i drain it, but im pretty sure its not the headgasket, im running arp head studs and a brand new head gasket.

Its a new radiator, the block was rebuilt a few months ago, so im pretty sure i dont need a flush, but im pretty sure i need new hoses, but there expensive. Im starting to run so short on cash. I hope i can make it to school tomarrow iwhtout overheating, it gets annoying having ot pull over so it can cool.

Oh, and its a stock radiator. What are some signs of the waterpump going bad? So i know what to look for. Oh, and both upper and lower rad hoses were really hot, but the upper one just seem to be blown up like a baloon.

Are you sure you installed the thremostat correctly and that it is the right one? Cause if your upper radiator hose is ballooning then that means it might be pushing against a closed thermostat. I could be wrong but sounds logical to me.
