OBD II + strict emissions - what are my options?
 

What's up folks?

So I've been doing a lot of reading this last year as i'm slowly piecing my kit together.

One concern I have is what method of fuel management I'm going to use when the time comes to install all this ----. I know of all the options available...FMU, hack, uberdata, turboedit, hondata, blah blah blah.

My problem is I have a 98 civic which is of course OBD II and somewhat strict emissions tests - aka I can't convert to OBD I or 0 because if I did I wouldn't pass emissions inspections.

So what are my options here? Obviously FMU and the hack. Everybody knows the FMU setup is sketchy, and the hack advances timing like mofo. what other options do I have?

Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks again to everybody on this forum who has contributed! ;D

Oh P.S - if I used the hack with something like MSD BTM would that be an ideal setup? I'm pretty ---- about doing things right the first time and keeping my car clean and running smooth.

Go OBD1...easy...
get a OBD2-OBD1 harnass plug the OBD1 ecu with uberdata...
when you got for inspections...unplug the harnass put the OBD2 ecu back put stock injectors back...voila

Agreed. Just make sure everything is easily swapped. You will have to change injector clips to run DSM's so you may want to get the correct injectors so the OEM ones will fit back in.

Let me clarify. When we have to test for emissions here it is both a visual inspection as well as strapping the car up to a dyno and metering the exhaust gasses.

How will my car react if it's turbo'd and suddenly I switch from OBD1 and uber to OBDII and they run my car on the dyno with no fuel management at all? Sure it's only temporary but I don't like the idea of it being driven under boost with a stock fuel setup. :-\

CSAddict - what would the correct injectors/clips be so I can swap to and from with ease?

Emissions inspections dont test boost ranges. Most test idle and then like 10mph or 20mph cruising ranges.

Okay guys I found out some more info regarding emissions testing here. This should make it a lot more clear what exactly I can get away with.

The following things are checked:

gas cap
catalytic converter
air injection system
O2 sensor system
fuel filler restricter
"check engine" light

Okay get this....in the check engine light section it says the following:

"Effective April 1, 2003, an illuminated "check engine" light is no longer a mandatory pass/fail component of the emissions testing process. If the "check engine" light is illuminated, it is noted on the vehicle inspection report each motorist receives at the end of the emissions testing procedure. However, it is an informational tool for the motorist, rather than a reason for failure."

So that's good..I don't have to worry about a CEL at least.

Here's what it says about the OBD testing:

"Beginning with 1994 models, some vehicles have been equipped with standardized computer-controlled OBD. Beginning with 1996 models, the OBD interface (a pigtail plug) was standardized on most models. 1994 and newer vehicles are checked for OBD computer codes. The result of the OBD test is advisory only."

What do you guys think of that?

You would have to get an injector that is a direct replacement for OBDII honda injectors.

In other words a direct replacement aftermarket injector, such as an RC 440, as opposed to a DSM injector in which I'd have to grind down the rubber injector housing, correct?

yes get some RC injectors.
I would get some 550 or 650...and run uberdata
And then do the switcheroo when going for insepections...

I would disconnect the turbo from the charge pipes also....cause I know those guys would like to rev that engine..

damn OBD II!! Anyways..I just wanna get my turbo project off the ground so I'm just gonna run the FMU and stock injectors (I know I know) at 5.5 to 6 psi of boost then worry about the rest after that.

I don't want to have to switch ---- everytime I go for an inspection so I'll probably run the hack with BTM.
