My tuner know what he's talking about????

ok, so I am in the process of getting boosted (ehh been in that "process" for too long now) Anyways hoping to get it all finished this winter. Well theres one guy that does pretty cheap street tunes local to me so I just kinda assumed the whole time I would go with this guy. Well anyways I have my doubts on how he plans to tune my car. I have a d16y8 (crazy p2p maps) and will be going with a chipped p28. When I talked to him, he made it sound like the timing was not an issue and he would just use stock p28 igntion maps and then retard 1* per lb boost. From my understanding, the timing on the y8 is a bitch, and not as simple as just using the p28 map and simply retarded 1 degree per pound boost. He said that he would only alter the ignition timing if it was knocking. Am I making the y8's timing issues out to be bigger and badder than they are, or is my tuner not such an "expert" afterall? this is a guy that has worked at a shop, and claims to have tuned many y8's before, as well as "many" built motors too. It is $150 for a street tuning sessiong, and he has a wideband and datalogging equipment and an emulator, says he has over 5 years tuning, but i think he's 19 ::) "the part throttle air fuel ratio is usually between 14-16afr For full throttle tune, I aim for 11.5-12 air fuel ratio depending on boost." His target afr

what do you guys think, how many of you guys have tuned your y8's starting with a p28 basemap? Should I trust this guy?

well since ive never tuned before, i dont know a whole much, but what i know that the more advanced the timing to more hp you get, but the great risk you run for pre det, so to cure this you run a high octane fuel.

but what do i know, i drive a focus.

good point.... Jk, but yes that is true to a point, and I am not worried about the tuners 1* retard per lb boost, thats fairly standard, but that he is just starting off the z6 (p28) map not wanting to change everything from 16-12* and fully advance the dizzy (or whatever setup that is suppossedly correct for the y8 timing)

He wants to keep my dizzy stock and not touch it.

Guys with y8 tuning experience help me out. What should we start the timing at, what is the "new thing to do" I know that there have been many debates on y8 timing, and I am just asking for someone else to give me an idea of where to start.

thanks
RKS

Y8's def require a whole different timing map than the D16Z

If you search for a post by J Davis in this section (Engine Management) a lot of the reasons why are explained.

Its probably not that he doesnt know, but he might not have as much experience as he states when it comes to Y8 motors.

Your tuner doesn't sound like he knows very much about Y8s.

I said it once, a stock Y8 has very good quench. The flame propagates very quickly through the combustion chamber and thus does not need highly advanced spark. Now a Y8 with Vitaras would need more timing as quench is now gone.

Timing can be adjusted on the dyno. Many Y8's bearings get smashed to ---- because poeple use Z6 timing maps and all the force lands right on the bearings instead of after TDC.

Go check out JD thread. He spent some time with a Y8 on the dyno and came up with some decent timing maps. I'd link you there, but I'm tired as ---- and am now going to bed.

Good Luck.

Sort the forum by Topic Starter...go forward until you find J. Davis name.

Read a lot of his other stuff too, he is a knowledgeable guy. I little strange, but smart :)

if you want to try and ease some of the timing woes that a y8 has, change the cam gear to a cam obd0 or obd1 cam gear and line it up like a z6, sure the valve timeing is off a bit, but you could also change over to a p28 or p08 cam. the y8's have funky timing because they run a knock sensor and have 9.6:1 compression the z6 has no knock plus 9.4:1, as stated above, y8's have good quench pads in the cylinder head, but most d series do. you should think about doin some bottom end mods to the oiling system, as the oil pump is far less than adequate, and the oiling holes in the block are far too small, have a machine shop open them up as well as the holes in the bearings, as well as having the pump blue printed, it will save your ass
