That's just the melted plastic linning. I double checked this morning and nothing is touching J1.
they were but I cut them shorter so they aren't any more. Could putting the ostrich in the wrong way cause an ecu failure. I finally realized that after my second try too. Ostich is still good though casue I just helped tune my buddies car after my ecu incident. If you want more pix of certain areas u think might be it let me know...

I'm sorry man, I know you're trying but that looks like complete ass. I used to do electronics repair for a living and that's a mess. The leads need to be clipped, the solder needs to come off and get laid back down right. You have residue of cheap solder flux everywhere too, needs to get alcohol scrubbed with a toothbrush.

Send $20 and the ecu to me and I'll fix your mistakes and ship it back to you (does not include testing/troubleshooting, just soldering).

On a much brighter note, I got the chance to examine a xenocron chipped ecu. Looked clean. I'm about to send you some goodies xeno that you'll really like and won't go back to anything else.

you really can't tell where your problem is unless something is obviously burnt, and I'm sure you don't have an o-scope or any other type of diagnostic equipment. So get some braid and clean that setup.

Just like everyone else has said, your soldering is poor at best.

I use a small iron to solder PCB's, 12w is more then sufficient (no matter what all these other guys say). You can just rework the existing solder on the board, get some liquid flux and dab it on the solder joints, then heat them back up until the solder flows.

It may be that a short has permanently damaged your ecu, only by correcting your previous mistakes will you find out either way. Might be time to order a xenocron ready chipped ecu.

i just think the technique is off, doesn't look like the solder is "penatrating" we'll say. need to get it to go in, not above

How would I test it to see if it's bad besides the fact that it's throwing a cel on my car. I have access to various electrical equipment at school like o-scopes, voltmeters, etc. I'd like to narrow down where it might have shorted. Any one ever trouble shooted an ecu using electrical equiptment let me know thanks.

Hell of a lot easier to just clean your soldering mess up versus trouble shooting. The most trouble shooting you can do without schematics would be checking for bad traces or burnt chips (and sometimes they run just fine with burnt chips). Clean up the solder - go from there. If you have access to all that fancy ---- at school then why not bring it up there and do it right?

Okay obviously i'm an idiot...how would I clean up splatter made by the solder? I tried to remelt the splattered solder on the board with the soldering iron and it was melting and comming off. But not sure if it might have burnt the board or not. I didn't leave it in one spot for long periods of time though. After doing so, there doesn't seem to be any solder touching eachother. I plugged it back into my car and still giving me a cel... ???

The only thing i can currently think of is, when the capacitor leads were touching the case, you had a short between power and ground. Its probably safe to assume Keihin engineers included some surge protection, but you might have blown a power rail.

First step would be to test the power and grounds on your board. An easy way is to look up the component part numbers and reference the data sheets. Start with power and ground, then look for any obvious signs of damage.
