MegaSquirt and Coil packs?

I want to boost a friends Spec V nissan and despite my advice to ditch the qr25 for a SR20 he wants to keep the stock one. My question is this. I can't seem to find any definitive answers on Mega squirt and coil packs. Will it work? I just read over the FAQ's on the megasquirt site and I ca't seem to find my answer. Anybody here tuned mega on a Coil pack setup?

I thought about the whole FMU or VAFC method but I feel like mega squirt would be a liitle more accurate, I have heard the QR motors don't have a large margin of error when it comes to the tune.

96Turboracer or JD, you guys got any opinions?

there is no one to call, its a DIY fuel management. they sell the boards and tell you the parts to buy... you want answers you have to search the MegaSquirt forums... all the programs for it are open source and can be worked to do anything, if you got he skill im sure you or someone else can work the program to do it...

back on subject, i have heard of people running coil packs with MS... probably just need some more researching....

right in the ms faq it pretty much tells you everything you need to do to hook megasquirt up on any car running fords edis 4, 6, or 8. Only 2 wires actually hook up to megasquirt to run the whole ignition. The stock ford ignition module makes the coil packs look like a distributor. Cheap and easy, dont know why everyone isnt using it.

Thats soild ---- right there. I remember reading about Fords EDIS but I didn't interpret that it was the work around, Never tuned or anything before this would be my first stab at it.

Only difficult bit about fords edis is making the correct trigger for it.

You can run coil on plug (or COP for short), but its still very experimental (at least when i last looked at it). You can also run wasted spark with 2 vb921's and a coil pack from something like a BMW mini.

Wasted spark or EDIS can both be controlled by MS1 I believe coil on plug is MS2 but don't quote me on that. Search the msefi.com message boards for all the answers.

Last but not least, if it can be done, it has been, have a look for someone else with a nissan. I'm sure at least one of them runs megasquirt.

toyota v6 = wasted spark

fords edis is wasted spark. You can adapt the entire ford ignition system to any engine. ex- if you have a 4 cyl, find an contor or whatever and take the coil packs, plug wires (youll have to use your ends that go to the engine), vr sensor, ignition module, and trigger wheel. The only customization is mounting the trigger wheel and a bracket for the vr sensor. These nogs will set you up with some real ----.... http://www.trigger-wheels.com/

Im starting this setup in a 7mgte supra as we speak.

Re: MegaSquirt and Coil packs?

The most bullet proof method would be EDIS with either MS-1 or MS-2. Second best would be running any waste spark coil pack directly from MS. MS-1 will do it for sure with Extra code. Not sure about MS-2. MS-1 with Extra will also run COP in a wasted spark configuration. Also remember it now has a wheel decoder so if your setup has a stock crank sensor it probably can be used without the hassel of installing the 36-1 tooth wheel from the ford setup.

Re: MegaSquirt and Coil packs?

yea, but the advantage of the ford setup is its popularity. Finding all the calculations for dual cam sensors on toyotas and ---- is a bit out of your average enthusiasts reach. There is a section in the msII manual that gives you everything you need to setup the ford system.

Re: MegaSquirt and Coil packs?

You can't use the wheel decoder with EDIS, but you can run wasted spark. I've installed about 5-6 Megasquirts on mates cars now. Not done much tuning of them, but i'm familiar with the hardware options.

the ford edis is a wasted spark setup

Using an MS1 here with SnS-Extra firmware on an Ford 2.3T I added EDIS to. Works real nice ;)

Re: MegaSquirt and Coil packs?

For what it's worth I build megasquirt boxes and I have run BMW Coil on Plug motors in wasted spark with COP coils successfully using 6 680 ohm resistors, 6 VB921 and 3 spark output signals.
