manually timing

can someone explain how do u know what degree you are at when manually retarding the distributor. i know when you are pushing it back to the rear is advance and pushing toward the front is retard but how would u know what degree isit on, can u tell with the timming light, i need to retard it to 6 degree or so, but don't know how far i should push it.

Well, you can't do it with just any timing light. Some don't have advance on them. So in order to do it right and know you are retarding it a specific amount you will need a timing light with advance. ;)

wow learned something that i thought i already knew. so i have my timing set to the center mark (red one), by what the picture showed that means it is at 16 degrees? the map i am running says it was tuned on 12 degrees so do i just move it a little past the top mark?

Use a dial-back light, so that at idle the TDC mark is lined up w/ the gun set to the same # that is in the idle portion of your map.

Holy run-on sentence.

i'll see if one of my friends have one of those guns you are talking about.
Hey PM me and let me know when you will be able to come over and tune my car.

yeah i'm using yours, it runs fine until i get on it an dthe it goes way too rich. but the A/F guages is alot smoother instead of how it used to be. used to be all over the place and now it's real smooth. other then that its fine, just need to get somebody to tune it to my car a little better.

and my timing is still stock, so i'll chnage that tonight and try again.

damn i can't believe it runs rich. I have a super small wrx turbo so i would think it wouldn't be too rich. I was actually running very rich with beerbong's maps on my car. What size turbo are you running?

I should have a new map up soon. I just got the map signal hooked up for my wideband and now I have some better tuned maps if you want them. Before i was running a little lean under part throttle boosting. Now it is near perfect.

i have a .43 .48 t3, i thought that was around the same size as the wrx turbo. if you post them up i will probly download them but i don't have a burner so i can't burn them yet. i still haven't messed wiht my timing because my friend with the timing gun is always working or watching his little bro and sis. i was just gonna use your tune for a base until i could find somebody to come over here and tune it for me, so i guess it is good enough for now.

Re:manually timing

hmm...i'm pretty sure that your turbo is bigger than mine is. Why do you think its rich? Is it stuttering or anything in boost? If you have one of those autometer af gauges or something and it is reading full rich while in boost then that is probably normal since its just a narrowband signal. Also i'm not sure if you are running the stock o2 sensor or not, but i tuned these maps with closed loop disabled and it seemed to run much better than with it enabled. My sensor could have been going bad though.
