Default Manifold glows red while running Rich??

My buddy just got his setup done it's a 93 prelude h23, td05 turbo, jonny racecar fmic, vafc hack, and msd 6 btm.
Well the first problem was too much boost. So he got a t3 wastegate from a chrysler, that was supposed to open around 4psi, and we checked that with a boost pump. But the car still made around 10 psi at higher rpms, and was hitting fuel cutout ie the ecu was seeing boost. so the only way to limit the boost to around 5-6 psi has the wastegate open at idle, so now it spools slow as hell. But we can deal with that when he gets cash for an external wastegate.

But what I don't understand is his a/f gauge is reading pretty rich (I know they're not perfect) but after about 6-7 minutes of moderately hard driving, the manifold (log style) and turbo center section is glowing red. I thought that meant you were way lean.
Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.
thnaks

retarted timing raises EGT's and could cause a glowing manifold

wow thanks that could be it because he has base timing all the way retarted and the btm at 3degress per psi. plus we know the hack ***** your timing.

well what do you guys think I should do about it, as far as where to set the initial, and how many degrees per pound.
And thanks for the help so far.

wooooo there young buckaroo, you don't have to retard the timming that much. at first i had the timming in my b16 retarded 6 degrees, now it's only retarded 3 degrees. i'm running 1 step colder plugs too ngk 4091s' gapped .28. 11psi on a b16,dsm450s,vafc,wal255fp. never heard detonation. if i had a btm i'd keep stock timming and have the btm at -1 deg. per 1 psi.+ the colder plugs.

i don't know why people knock the vafc that much? i have it and it kicks but. i have the timming retarded only 3 degrees and running 11psi. like it's all good 250whp in a b16 @11psi w/.60/.63 t3
