Looking at a SMC 500

Hey guys my turbo project is almost complete, here is what I have so far for 93 civic DX:

IHI RB5 turbo
HF manifold
adapter plate
FMIC from Custom Coach (group buy, shipping out Tuesday)
450cc Blue tops
probe BOV (for now)

What I'm looking at now is an SMC 500 because of it's price. I've been doing some research on it and it seems to operate the same as Apexi S-afc except it has no display, is that correct? As it has no display would I have to tune it using a Air/Fuel gauge? I'm just looking for some help on this from somebody with experience running or installing the SMC500 on their Honda. As my project nears completion I just want to thank everyone on this site for all the info, this site kicks ass!

Yup. I have one I;m installing soon. Same as SAFC just no screen. And uses little knobs. Great for the price.

i have one...gets the job done, but barely....takes a long time to do the settings, and doesnt like revving to a constant high rpm, or racing from a roll since it has no high and low throttle settings like an afc does

Re:Looking at a SMC 500

Ghettoturbo how did you set your SMC, did you use a air/fuel gauge? How much boost are you running with the SMC?

Thanks

I've got a SMC500 too.

Last week I installed it with out having my turbo or 450cc's on yet. So I put all the settings at zero.

Installing it was easy, "tuning" it was easy but took time, oh well. Once you get the settings that work for you, you won't be touching it again and it's better than having a flashy display that will attract the thieves. ;D

Hey phresh_5 what are you driving? So your install went smooth, how were the instructions with the kit? Are the instructions vehicle specific? I'm going to order mine next week so I'll probably be hittin ya up for some more info on the install if I need any help.

Thanks

Re:Looking at a SMC 500

yea its vehicle specific...so if you dont have a common honda you will need to know your ecu pinouts to install....its a piece of cake ( took 15 minutes maybe 20 tops)

Well I drive a 93 civic DX coupe with a non vtec D15B7, is that common enough? Is there a thread on here about tunning these things with a A/F gauge or a wideband O2?

Re:Looking at a SMC 500

92-95 Civic/Pigtegra is about as common as it gets. :)

You'll be fine... and maybe YOU could do a write-up or review of the system for us? I have never laid hands on an SMC before, and while I have a good idea of what it does I haven't played with one to know it's quirks, good points, and bad points.

Re:Looking at a SMC 500

Sure I'll do a writeup/review of the SMC500, ordering it on Tuesday so it'll be a couple weeks before I get. But I'm still looking for some links on tunning using an A/F or wideband O2

Re:Looking at a SMC 500

its a decent piece, but doesnt like to rev high at a constant rpm (staging is fun)...plus it takes a while to set

Re:Looking at a SMC 500

I tried to order my SMC 500 monday from Lakeeffectperformance.com with no luck. I emailed them and got no response and I called just to get there voice mail each time. Has anyone here ever dealt with these people, are they a real business? Does anybody know where I can get a SMC 500?

Thanks for your help
