Intro to tuning OBD1 BMW's... with files and maps!

Your car will blow the ---- up if you turbo it or try to tune it! N/A is best!!! I take responsibility for nothing. All info is owned by someone else! Probably Jesus!

Good luck, and when you see this ^^ you know you need to crank up the boost to blow the chunks out the 5" DP. :6

I get really tired of people thinking having the tools to tune a car = being a tuner. I am also tired of lame asses acting like they are god's gift to man for having their boyfriend or parents buy them a tune, or hold their hand and click the mouse for them.

I lost my old harddrive with all of my programs from megasquirt stuff to honda stuff to bmw programs, but this is plenty enough for someone to make a basemap, or even a solid baseline tune. I will continue to add tid bits here and there.

Ok some background stuff:
Non Vanos ETM = http://www.greystonesagainst3g.co.uk/e34_91_etm.pdf
Vanos ETM = http://www.greystonesagainst3g.co.uk/e34_92_etm.pdf

Tunerpro = http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/downloadApp.htm

A collection of BMW .bin files that I still had left... lost a few "pro" rips I had, will up when I get a chance... better yet, someone PM me and I can send them to you and you can host them/deal with the legal consequences if there are any. I divided them into 403nv and 413vanos rar files for now. I will update and add many more but for now those are STOCK bins.

Ok now you have tuner pro, a chip burner or ostrich (hardware available from -------------).
Now you need to make a definition file. I will update one soon to add injector offset and a few other little things to make driveability and PT better.
Here is a collection of .xdf's from around the world wide fail. I also included links to MapHunter and Analyze for hex savvy people to use and contribute if they so choose.

Ok some more info for tuning non vanos: The MAFs hit the voltage limit relatively early and there FEW other options so you have to mess with the stock MAF. Here are some ideas I discussed with a very cool guy from Romania. "regarding the MAF issue - a method that works very well it was this one: remove the 325MAF element from original plastic tube , put that one in a aluminum or stainless 90mm diameter tube + a 800ohm resistor on MAF signal return wire (in my car that wire is blue, but you should search for your MAF wiring diagram, because is different than the wiring used in 402/403 configuration ...) - in this configuration, even at 14psi, that MAF will not be maxed out. Mention that you will experience some low-load issues, as 200-300rpm idle variation, slow throttle response at low loads ...
another solution is to install a resistor on your original MAF signal return wire (i can't tell you how big should be this one, but bigger that 400ohm - i tried with this one , and it seems that is not working well , even at 12-13psi, at 5000rpm the MAF is maxed out ...)
anyway, using a big resistor you should think about the fact that you are diminishing the range of your MAF (probably after 4000-4500rpm the MAF will start to indicate the same value ...) in this situation you will need to manually increase the fuel for the top of the rev range ... and if you will be on that rpm range without full boost (part throttle), the mixture will be very rich ..."

The idea here is to increase the Diameter of the MAF tube if necessary and by adding a resistor you essentially "bump up" where the maf table begins to read the load. You are losing resolution and low end response but there are not many options. I suggested using a zehner diode to limit the voltage to say 4.7volts and/or adding a resistor. I recommend for both vanos and non vanos cars locking the MAF at max voltage of ~4.7.
For the 413 vanos cars you have a ton of options of bigger and better maps that will read well over 500whp. I personally believe that using the 413 DME, proper injectors and MAF can yield 700whp or better. Stock MAF should be good to 300whp with minor adjustments, maybe more depending on how you play with it. Same resistor tricks can apply, also changing the MAF tables. The included XDF's have tables for stock 403/413 MAFs, resistored MAFs, 540 MAF and the porsche 803 MAF that can take you over 500whp.

Here is a GREAT collection of threads and documentation AND a FANTASTIC corrected MAF table .xls... you NEED to get this.
http://uploading.com/files/NXCBDDKT/Docs.rar.html

Also, a thread about making a <5$ multitune for the DME, I personally uses this as a theft deterent :6.
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1176730
Also! If you have an EWS enabled 413 or 506 DME (M50 and S50 can interchange bins, and DMEs!) in order to use non EWS bins and tunes you will need to kill your EWS. To do this, use a non EWS tune and snip pin #66 at your DME, alternatively snip pin #7 at the ODB connector, although I always cut it at the DME. It is probably a thicker green wire. But pin 66 is the one you gotta kill.

Really this should be enough to get anyone on the road. I will add more as it is convenient for me, or as is requested by non failures. Thanks.
Also if you think you might be of use of me, or want to buy something from me, suckblowboost@googlemail.com is the addy. Pictures of your female relatives are also desired.

5 star that ---- for an HMT brotha and lets get this 413 DME more hooked up and pimped out than a p75 :y

And of course the "pro tuners" have access to much more info, there is a lot more cool ---- to do with these DME's, these are just the basics! They can ---- all over honda ECU's but there is 0 community support so BMW owners just have throw money at pillow biters to get one time tunes. The more this basic info gets out the more likely it is someone will help out.
I spent a longass time working on anti lag for the stock DME and when I kind of got it going I realized it was too rough to recommend to other people so I see there are a lot of difficulties with something like this!

Good stuff, I can't wait to go through it all. I have a 95 M3 that needs some boost

the junk yard is your only option for bmw, audis, vw, thats where you will find them. all the same results, perfect exterior blown engines. ggod luck.

I tune for a living, rolling up on a decade experience. I fail to see how a MAF setup is in any way superior to a MAP setup?

OBD1 Honda kicks 99% of the "purpose built" standalones squarely in the nuts. I appreciate your not-Honda content, but if you don't know what you are talking about don't make those comparisons.

Mr. Lindsay, most BMWs have very stout and reliable engines. I am a little annoyed with all the small stupid electrical ---- that goes wrong with them but they are robust drivetrains unlike VW/Audi.

Living in europe where a owning a 5-series is like owning a Cavalier in America, I am sure you see a large number of unmaintained vehicles that fall apart due to abuse and neglect. A little perspective in these matters is always good. ;)

Yo Mutumbo, all the money you dump into your CF hooded civic motor, you can make that power on a stock M50 no sweat. Certain M5x/S5x motors outflow the ---- out of 2jz's and are plenty stout. Just because krauts drive them like their fiestas and blow them up doesnt mean much.

And JD, people have shown me remapped 413's to natively use MAP hardware. There is a lot of ---- going on in these DMEs that I have not seen in honda ecu's despite the massive support for them... if they had the same community, I say much better ---- would appear. Who knows though. The bosch ----------ers had an unlimited budget to design this thing, I still think its pretty cool even if you don't. :y

I hate MAF's like no other, but if I can make my M3 use a MAP sensor then I am in.

JD, it's going to take quite a few sewell racing air fresheners on top of $35 to get my M3. O0

Arnold, hopefully you are on medication and are back willing to play by the rules?

This post is a good start...
