how easy and cheap is it?

hey everyone!!!

I've been reading and reading and reading, I got my self some 450s and a 90 PM6 ecu that looks like this

Whats next is a ROM burner? Where would I go about getting the best one, for the least amount of money? I was looking at burners and they are actually cheaper then an AFC, so then whats the point of doing anything but chipping?

........then after I pick up the burner, do i just D/L some free software, get a couple maps from people or PGMFI, etc, burn some chips and I'm done?

Is there anything else?

because it just all seems too easy?

you have to desolder the eprom and put a zif socket in it's place. And buy a new EPROM or EEPROM.
Then you're done....yup it's cheaper...a bit more work, but better fuel management....kinda standalone. ;D

Thanks Semnos, The EPROM or EEPROM is the chip in my picture with the yellow PM6 sticker on it? cause if it's that then it's already got like a socket thing(you know, like I can just pull the chip out with my hand)

I am also working on the same thing, with the same car and same turbo, same ECU, and mine was also chipped with a JDM MUGEN TYPE R Egay chip, so it's already socketed or whatever. I'm also looking into programing it. I'm getting one from a member here, but I will also eventually buy me a burner to learn how to tune the car.

as far as I have learned, you are right, you can take the one you have in there out, and put the other one in as soon as you burn it.

I like Turboedit as far as how it looks and works.
There's lots of info on how-to here

I'm glad this thread was started because any doubts I might have might be answered here.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this computer is one of those ebay performance things where you send in your old one and they send you a new one, chipped,
I know the chip comes out cause I took it out, maybe instead of me buying a burner, some one could burn me a couple chips then just mail em to me? that way, I could have absolutely free FI control!!! but i think i'll wait and just buy a burner,
Davcivic, where do you live?

I STRONGLY reccomend anyone attempting DIY ECU based fuel managment to own a ROM burner.... its just the nature of the beast to sometimes need to change something quickly.

You can get a nice willem type burner on ebay for $79 shipped. I got one and it works great. The really nice part is that it gets power from your usb port so you don't have to worry about messing with an ac adapter, and if you have a laptop, you can burn right IN YOUR CAR. Cool huh? ;D And it is a lot cheaper than the GB that just went down. :-*

Group bay, damn I missed it. I'm in Florida, I know I should have a burner to tune the car and burn my own maps later, and I will do that, but right now money is tight and I just need the car running.
I just hope the base map i'm getting works pretty good, engine not going boom, and then I'll get a burner and tune it whenever I get the money.

Re:how easy and cheap is it?

Some guy on the Uberdata forum found a usb chip burner that's frickin' cheap. it's like $70 bucks, and it's all self contained--gets power from the usb cable. Looks good but we don't have confirmation yet that diy honda tuners can use it. Apparently some GM tuning shop sells it, and says it will burn at29c256 chips (eeproms--best to use imo). Here's the link to the thread:
