I think this "How to tune a motor" article by Import Builders is pretty good -> http://www.importbuilders.com/tuningacar.htm but then again I am a novice tuner so I wouldn't really know if it wasn't good ....

Search for information on how to read plugs...
In reality, if you know what you are looking for, you 'could' tune your car strictly by reading the plugs.
You can tell whether you need to add or take out timing, and you can actually read what your AFRs are at...again, if you know what you are looking for.
Nothing is as good as a combinaton of the three though, use a Wideband, use a dyno and read the plugs...
